UniAbuja is a shame – Minister

The crisis ridden University of Abuja is a shame and not befitting of a tertiary institution in the nation’s capital, Minister of Education Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmad Rufa’i has said.

Speaking at a public hearing on a bill to provide for the establishment of the Federal University of Petroleum, Effurun; a bill to amend the Federal Polytechnic Act and a motion on the incessant students’ protest in the university at the National Assembly complex yesterday, the minister blamed the governing council of the institution for the problems that led to the crisis in the.

“University of Abuja is supposed to be a pride to all of us but unfortunately, it is a shame! The university, since inception, there has been so much problems,” Professor Rufai said.

“The university has a governing council comprising of the president, representatives of the ministry of education, representatives of the regulatory agencies and the National Universities Commission that is supposed to be the eye of the visitor from the ministry of education. If you have an effective one in place, then everything goes well but if you have the type that we had in the University of Abuja, then you will understand how we got to this crisis,” she said.

She said the report of the visitation panel that conducted an investigation into the activities of the school exposed rot that is “deeper than what we are seeing now.”

She said that the report of the panel has been concluded, a white paper drawn and submitted to President Goodluck Jonathan for approval via the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

For his part, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okogie, represented by his deputy Mr Akinbode Agbaoye said the institution was warned several times in December 2004, 2007 and 2009 by the commission not to set up the faculties, having failed to meet the requirements but it refused to heed them.

“In this kind of case, the vice chancellor ought to have been prosecuted,” he said.

Federal Government Plans To Abolish NCE As Teaching Qualification In Nigeria

THE Federal Government, on Thursday, proposed a plan to phase out colleges of education and abolish the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE)as the basic requirement for teaching in secondary and primary schools in Nigeria.

Minister of State for Education, Mr Kenneth Gbagi, gave this hint in Abuja while inaugurating the technical committee on the establishment of six newfederal universities and the future of colleges of education, polytechnics, and mono-discipline universities in Nigeria.

The 11-man technical committee is headed by the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, while the Chief Executive Officer and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, is to serve as the secretary. The committee has up till Monday, next week, tosubmit its report.

Inaugurating the committee, the minister said: “We are on the verge of whether we should phase out the colleges of education or upgrade them to degree-awarding institutions or convert them to purely technical schools. One of the universities we are going to set up now will be to train teachers for the upper echelon of education,” adding that “it is no longer fashionable for us to have this teacher training stuff with colleges of education. So, come up with an in-depth arrangement as to what we intendto do.”

He disclosed that President Goodluck Jonathan had directed that the committee be set up to work out modalities for the establishment of the proposed six universities, one in each of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, especially in states that do not such federal institutions.

An Exclusive Interview With Helen Paul

Helen Paul-Bamisail has been a household name in entertainment industry. The Edo State- born comedian, presenter, singer and actress popularly known as Tatafo doesn’t need any introduction. Ask any Nigerian kid and he would tell you that lady who mimicked our voice.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) graduate of Theatre Art is counting her blessing on her baby voice that has brought her to limelight with little or no scandal. In an exclusive interview with Saturday Sun, the mother of one bared her mind on her journey into entertainment as an all-rounder and why the name Tatafo.

Background

I am from Edo State but born and bred in Lagos.

I attended all my schools in Lagos- primary school to the university. I had my Master’s degree and other certificates in Lagos. The name Tatafo Tatafo was given to me by a friend called Matthew. Matthew is someone that is very hilarious. We used to work together at Eko Mix school’s, that’s Eko FM.

And most times we sit together and exchange jokes. So, later Matthew left Eko real mix studios and got a job at Radio Continental as a producer. He suggested that I could use this Tatafo thing as a good content on radio. I accepted the idea as longer I would make a living out of it.

Sincerely, I just enjoy mimicking people and I mimic not just children, even adults, friends and family. By so doing, I was now able to adopt the baby voice and ever since I’ve been using it. Growing up Very funny, I had an interesting scenario and a lot of fun.

I grew up in Fadeyi area of Lagos with my great-grandmother, a strong disciplinarian. Later I started staying with my mum, though she is playful, but at the same time disciplined. She doesn’t need to shout on you or talk too much, with her blinks alone, you already know what she means. Her singing also tells you something, so you should know what to do. I grew up with those things, learning to talk with non-verbal communication. It was very interesting and that’s what made me who I am today.

Parents

My dad is in Abuja and he is someone who is busy, but my mum is the one I see every time when I need to pay school fees, eat and when I cry. She laughs with me when I laugh. She is always there with me. That’s why I am always fond of her as the only child.

Challenges

I don’t think I have challenges in my life. I didn’t actually know I was going to shine. So, I’m always enjoying myself, doing what I like to do best. But I didn’t really struggle. I was actually shocked at a point that I would get this type of attention, audience and love from my fans. Sincerely, I want to use this opportunity to thank all my fans that showed me love and made me feel special.

With my fans, I don’t think and feel like coming out faking. I would like to come out real- the way I want to look, talk, dance and jump. They make me work hard and try to give them new things. So, when we talk about challenges really, I am just grateful to God because I’m not always talking about odd moments. If you keep celebrating your past, you will never move forward.

So, I only look forward.

Marriage

I got married in 2010. I met my husband through my boss, Uncle Paul in our office then in Eko FM and we were friends. He was first brother. I used to call him brother, but now I call him by by his name, Femi. For me, I’m just enjoying myself. Anything I feel like doing, I invest in it and tell God about it. I am not thinking evil of anyone, I’ve never thought of destroying anybody’s life nor doing any evil to someone. So, why should my own have any problem? Things would work for me except anyone that is sitting down, thinking of evil and not have time to think of new ideas. I’ve never thought of all that.

There’s no way you will be plain with God that things will not keep coming to you. Ideas and concepts would be coming, but when you are there, destroying other people, busy thinking of what you`re not meant to think, of course you will not be able to come out with concepts or ideas. Why celebrity marriages crash No one wants to break up his/her marriage, no one wants to cry.

It can happen because there are no rules on how you can stay in marriage. If God is helping you, you thank your God. If it is not working for other people, we have to pray for them that God will help them locate the best person that would make them happy all their lives. It’s not just in entertainment industry that marriage problem comes. No, it happens in other industries but just because we are famous, that’s why people keep shouting that actresses, actors, musicians, comedians and those in the industry don’t stay in marriage.

The real fact is that it happens, it’s a normal thing that happens in our society. It happens in the banking sector. It happens to doctors, lawyers, etc. No one wants marriage break-up, no one wants to pull out of marriage. Marriage is a good thing, but you know, it’s not easy coming together as husband and wife. That means you`re thinking of the other person. Scandal Some people always abuse me too.

Sometimes when I don’t have time to make up, they abuse me. They would say that without make-up I’m not fine. Some people would say I’m a short woman, but I don’t care because it is not about size. If they don’t talk about you, that means you are no more living or relevant.

Programmes

I like it. I feel very cool. I just love camera. When I see camera or anytime I see micro-phone in front of me, I’m always excited. Experience doing her job and at the same time pregnant It was not easy, our body is different. For me, I’m a sanguine.

It’s very funny. Whenever I was pregnant, the child would start blowing me when I was on duty. I would caution him not to disturb me, that I am working. I would tell the unborn baby, “You know I’ve tried by transporting you down to Nigeria, so you too behave yourself.”. I took my drugs when I was meant to take them. It’s not easy being a mother. Advice to youths I tell them to keep being themselves, live a positive life and don’t try to please anyone. If someone is wearing Brazilian hair, you wear your three-in-one if you can afford it and carry yourself well. Success is not the way you look, it is what is inside you.

If you are joyful and happy inside, the sky is your limit or your beginning. Just keep being yourself and don’t let anyone talk down to you. You don’t try and follow what the society wants you to be. Who does God want you to be? Those are the questions you should be asking yourself. It is up to you to confess it over and over again to yourself that you are a great woman of substance, different from other women.

Vision

We thank God for the gift of life. The Bible says, “Write the vision and make it clear so that men can run along with you”. So, this is the vision you’re seeing now. I have a bridal shop, I sell ankara, lace fabrics and all stuff. I want God to keep giving me concepts; I pray for more ideas, I pray to get better each year, each time and season. If you cannot utilise your dreams, someone else would use them to utilize his/her own.

Crazy experience by a fan

My fans are my friends and my love.

One of the experiences I had was the day a fan slapped me from behind, out of excitement, but I could not talk. I am sure I cannot take that again. Such a person would be arrested person. Treasure Truth be told, God’s mercy. I value His mercy; I pray His grace should not leave me. Advice by her mother concerning sex and men She told me, “Don’t open your laps for men, they are bad”. Everybody is my friend, I said so, but men are bad, simple. And they are very deceptive. I had it in mind.

So, I fought them, I made them my friends and nothing more than friends. Not only men that deceive, women deceive too and women’s own is worse. Most times, I’m the one that breaks their hearts, because I have many male friends. Often, men don’t actually see me as a girl they can toast, rather they see me as a sister. My mind is not dirty, anything that wants to happen would happen, first through your mind.

So, my mind is plain and their mind too is plain. It is when one is thinking of evil that evil would come and consume the person. I was a tomboy, so they didn’t see me as a girl, they saw me as a sister. Uti and me My husband is jealous of me and my love Uti. He is my love on Jara show, nobody can take the place of it. Uti is my love, because Uti makes me get money from Jara. I like Uti very well.

Music album

As I said, every gift of God within me must find expression. I have talent to sing, dance and do comedy.

I have talent to sell things, so I am just enjoying myself. Stage fright As I said before, be yourself, enjoy what you do and definitely people would identify with you. Once you are good, people will follow you. People, who wouldn’t want to follow will sit down, so just be you and observe your society.

Acting career

I act now. My director and producer, Elvis Chuks invited me one day.

He said I’m funny and should come and act. I demanded my money and he quickly paid me and I was very happy. When I heard I was going to act along with Funke Akindele, Mama G and Bishop, I was excited. That brought out the joy in me. We did it, so we thank God.

I don’t really have as many tattoos as people think I do. I just have three on me and they all have their significance. The one on my hand is a rose and it signifies love. The one on my chest is a crown and it means that I am a queen in whatever I do – I call the shots. The one I have on my back means that I see you even though you think I don’t. I see everything you are doing, so watch it. They all have meaning and I am just someone who loves tattoos. There are no negative reasons I love them. I am not the only one wearing a tattoo, there are so many celebrities, both local and foreign, who wear them. It is just something I like. I can not describe why I like it. I feel it is sexy.

Life as a single mother
My daughter is an award-winning actress. She is going to be 12 but she is not a full time actress. She is still a baby and I try to restrict her acting so that she can concentrate more on her studies. Once in a while, we allow her act and only when she is on holidays. It has to be once in a while. When I started, it was a bit stressful because my kids were quite young. I had to be a working mother and business woman at the same time. I am someone who always strives for perfection. I am a very organised person. I draw out my time-table. I have a schedule of my day-to-day life so I am never caught unawares. That is why I don’t work too much. If I have planned my month and a sudden job comes up, I will not take it. I always have a schedule I follow in life and it has always helped me. When I am working, I know how to place my kids in the right place, sometimes with my mother. When they were much younger, they used to go with me but because of school, they stayed with my mother. I have some of my sisters that stay around. Now, my kids have grown up because my boy is 14 years old and the girl is 12 and they are both in secondary school. They take care of themselves more now. Apart from that, I still try to spend time at home more than I used to when they were younger because they need my attention now. I need to be sure that they are studying. They are becoming teenagers. Teenage pressure could be much on them so I have to be the father and mother to them at all times. It was not easy initially but as time goes on, you learn how to manage it. It becomes easy as time goes on.

Their father
I relate with their father. I do not talk about it because I give respect to my children, it is their privacy and they want to keep it private. Like I said, we were not just compatible, I met him and in a very short period of time, we got married. We really did not have much time to date. I was 21 years old then. In less than three months, I was pregnant and in less than six months, I was married to him. It was a very short period of time. We basically got married because of the pregnancy. We did not want to have the baby out of wedlock. We got married and we later discovered that there was some part of him that I did not like and there were certain things about me that he did not also like. We were not friends and that was the disadvantage. He was not my first, he was actually my third. I feel apart with my first boyfriend. My second boyfriend, we did not get intimate. So my ex was actually the second but my third boyfriend. I was young, I had my first boyfriend when I was in SS3 and I was about 18 years old. Then we broke up and I had somebody else. We were more like brothers and sisters in Christ so we really did not have any intimate relationship. Then, I met my ex-husband. He was the second man I was intimate with when it came to a relationship. I was young and the kind of life he wanted was to be married and still live the bachelor life while I wanted him to be married and stay at home. That was were we started having issues and problems but we are still friends. He still communicates with his kids.

Regrets
I do not regret leaving the marriage because I am better off. I regret rushing into marriage, but I do not use the word ‘regret’ anymore. It has become a lesson; I had to learn from that. Every disappointment is a blessing. Even though I felt disappointed that I got married at a young age and did not get to study the man I got married to and whose name I bear now, I still profited from it by having two wonderful kids. It is more than any other thing in life.

I vowed never to get married again
I said so back then when I was disappointed. When you are going into a marriage with so much expectation, hoping that is where you will end your life, you try all your best to make it work. If it does not work, you begin to have problems. Why I came back to the industry was because I found out that my marriage was not working. My job had nothing to do with my marriage. I knew my marriage was collapsing. I just needed something to keep me going. Since I had so much love for acting, I felt I should go back to what gave me so much happiness and joy because I knew that my home was not giving me that joy I needed. I felt it was not enough for me to sacrifice what would give me joy when I knew the reason why I was sacrificing it was not being appreciated.

I am an emotional person
I am a very emotional person. I am very loving but I am a one-way traffic kind of person. When I am in love, I am fully in love with the person. I give my best to the relationship. I am a very lovey-dovey kind of person and I love my man to always be there for me. Sometimes, it seems as if I am over-possessive. It is not that I am over possessive, I am just someone who wants to give everything into the relationship and expects to get the same back. When I do not get the same, I start having problems with that person. That is why I find it difficult to say I want to settle with a person. To me, marriage is a 50-50 thing. If I put in my 50, you have to put in your 50. In a situation where you cannot give me 50, then we are going to have a problem.

Rumours about me
I have cleared the air about so many things. When I was growing up and I read some things about certain people, I always used to say that there would be an element of truth in every rumour. If they talk about me and Muka Ray, I understand because we are very close. In this society, when a man and a woman are very close, people tend to think that they are dating. That is understandable, but when it comes to the case of someone like Pasuma, it is very strange to me. He never asked me out, we are friends but not as close as people portray it. For crying out loud, we are not dating. I don’t have an intention of dating him and I am sure that he does not too. He is my friend, maybe because I have been to one or two of his events. He respects me and I do too but just as a friend. He is a friend and a brother; nothing beyond that. Muka Ray and I became very close and working business partners. My boyfriend understands that. He did not bring me into the industry. He helped me because he was there before me. He helped me grow. I came into the industry myself and I got into the Yoruba movie industry through Alhaji Taiwo Hassan, Ogogo, in 2001. Bimbo Akintola brought me into the industry when I joined AGN in 1998. About a year after I joined the Yoruba movie industry, I met Muka who believed he could help me build my career. I told him I wanted to be a producer and he told me that it was good as he was also a producer. He said we could work hand in glove and that is what we have been doing. Sometimes he works, I contribute; I work and he contributes, both financially and physically. I am not dating any politician. Can’t I afford a car and a house? I am a producer, I produced about 13 movies and I’m not from a poor background. Whatever it is that I have today, I started with my father’s money. I am okay on my own. So nobody has to get me a car or a house.

My father
I come from a very well-to-do family. My grand father was very okay – Adekunle Ogunro. We are a very comfortable family. My father was a very lively man who lived life to the fullest. People call me daddy’s girl. My father ‘met money at home’, his parents were very wealthy especially my grandmother. We lived in Obanikoro. My father was someone who was so much into enjoying life that it cut his life short. He did everything in excess -drinking, smoking, spending money and having fun. I appreciate my dad for the fact that he was my father and we were more like friends. He also had me when he was young. He was 21 years old when he had my brother and 22 when he had me. He lost his life at a very young age, that is why whatever I do, I don’t get addicted. I don’t drink too much if I have to. I don’t smoke at all, only when I am on set and I have to. I don’t do drugs, never have and never will. When he died, there was some money left for us. His own money. It was shared between my brother and I. It is that money I used to start my life and business – a better apartment, a shop, I travelled. My first car was from my father’s money.

About my boyfriend
He is a very caring person. It was not easy for him. He was really after me because when men come, I shut them off. I always put this defensive mechanism up. He was very patient and came in a very soft manner. We started as friends and we became lovers. His relationship with my kids is wonderful. My kids love him. He is a very busy person but any little time he has, he comes to see them and takes care of them. We have been together for a while. I keep my relationship very private. I made it public at a time and it was very stressful. When it is private, you enjoy it more because there are no third parties. He understands the nature of my job. He understands where I am coming from and I understand his too.

Tinuade Okoro Is Ghana's Best Graduating Medical Student

A Nigerian, Tinuade Okoro, has emerged the best graduating medical student in Ghana, in the process, scooping 16 prizes at the University of Ghana, Legon.

The prizes won by Tinuade included the Ghana Medical Association prize for the Best Overall Student in the MB Ch. B Final Part II examination; prize for All Round Best Student, sponsored by Ghana Health Service, and the Society of Obstetrics and Gyneacologists of Ghana prize for Best Student in Gyneacology as well as the R.K Obeng prize for Best Student in Clinical Pharmacology.

Others prizes won by Dr. Okoro are the Nana Preko Ampem II prize for Best Student in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology; Archeampong prize in Surgery and Harry Sawyerr prize in Medicine and Therapeutics among others.

In a letter dated February 28, 2013 and signed by Mrs. Selie Ama Baiden of the office of the Ag. Executive Secretary, Office of the Dean, College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana Medical School, the school invited her to its congregation/swearing-in-ceremony for newly-qualified Medical Doctors scheduled for March 23 at the Athletic Oval, University of Ghana, Legon.

Born Tinuade Olukemi Okoro and brought up in Jos, Plateau State, Tinuade’s parents are from Ondo State.

Her father, Mr. Benjamin Oyedele Okoro, is a retired civil servant while her mother, Mrs. Omotayo Yetunde Okoro, was a nurse until her untimely death in 2004- a woman she described as being of “exceptional humility, simplicity and grace”.

Tinuade began her primary school education in 1993 in Plateau Private School, Jos, continued in Rantya Model School, Jos and ended in Camp David Nursery and Primary School, Lagos. She attended Federal Government Girls’ College, Akure from 1998-2004, following which she completed some computer training while awaiting admission into the university.

She resumed at the University of Legon, Ghana in 2006 and was admitted into the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS), Accra in 2007.

Attributing her feat to God’s mercy and hard work, she said: “Structured learning also helped. You cannot just keep reading without a map, hoping to one day finish the material, you never will if you do not plan to!

“I was told when I began medical school that one should be grateful for a pass. While that may be true and I certainly got a number of passes, I decided that was not enough for me. I think one owes it to oneself and one’s Creator to aim for the highest available honor. That credits and distinctions exist means they are attainable.

“I know that life can be so difficult it is easy to slip into survival mode but there are enough potential limiting factors in this life without one adding a vote of no confidence in one’s own self to the list! A person has to be his own greatest cheer leader.

“How I worked hard for 16 prizes? Again, I know this sounds clichéd, or even falsely modest, but it is the truth. God helped me, plain and simple. I know there are really gifted people who probably could have done it ‘on their own’, but I know where my strength comes from. He blessed me with a good mind, memory, and tongue. He helped me grasp information easily, retain and apply the knowledge accurately even after long periods.

Started ICAN In SS3, Bags First-Class At 20

If you ask a school child what he or she wants to become in future at three different occasions, you are likely to get three different answers. This is because the professional aspiration of many children is ever changing.

But somehow, this is not the case with Abdul-Azeez Adeniji, the 20-year-old, who emerged the best graduating student at the second convocation of Caleb University, Imota, Lagos State, on Saturday. He had wanted to become a chartered accountant as a secondary school boy. Adeniji shifted his ambition to law after he obtained six distinctions and three Bs at the 2008 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

Though he scored 269 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in 2008, his post-UTME score of 60 was not enough for him to secure admission to the University of Benin. He was later offered admission to study Economics at the Caleb University. Now, the Ilepa, Abeokuta-born graduate, who scored a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.75 out of a possible 5.0, to emerge the best, aspires to become a development economist.

But despite this, Adeniji has not dropped his ambition to become a chartered accountant. And the 2008 graduate of Yaba College Staff Secondary School, Lagos, is on the way to becoming a chartered accountant and a development economist. He had written and passed the Accounting Technician Scheme 1, 2 and 3 of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. He had also written and passed the intermediate examination and professional examination one of the institute. He is just a stage away from becoming a chartered accountant.
“I started the ATS when I was in SS3. I’ve cleared all but the last stage of ICAN professional examination, which I will write in May. By the Grace of God, I will pass the exam,” the assertive and confident young man said.

Asked how he was able to combine his degree programme with the ICAN examinations, Adeniji said the success he recorded in SS3, when he wrote the ATS 1, motivated him to continue with the professional examinations after securing admission to the university.

He added that he was able to cope with the pressure of academics and strict rules guiding studentship in Caleb because of his belief that success could only be achieved through diligence, dedication, discipline and the grace of God.

“The two require the same level of discipline and seriousness. The university rules helped me, but I also placed stricter rules on myself. However, the virtues of discipline and hard work imparted into me by my parents also contributed to my success but my utmost help came from God,” he said.

Adeniji may, however, not work as a chartered accountant. His main concern now is how to revive the economic fortunes of Nigeria and that of the African continent.

“That is why, after my National Youth Service Corps Scheme, I will look for scholarship to study development economics in a foreign university. I’m concerned about the level of underdevelopment in my country and the African continent.

“That is why I want to develop economic policies that will enhance the rapid development of our nation and eventually become the first Nigerian or possibly African to become the World Bank president. I was not happy that the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, lost the race for the job. I will, by God’s grace, be the World Bank President one day,” he said.
Adeniji, who admitted that corruption was one of the challenges facing the country, however, disagreed with the method being adopted to battle the menace.

“Corruption can only be fought from within the individual and that is why I say every Nigerian should first remove the log in their eyes before they remove the peck in their neighbour’s or leaders’ eyes. As Nigerians, each of us should decide to do what is right always. When we do that, corruption will be kicked out of our land,” he said.

He also blamed religious people for the killings in some parts of the country. “Those who kill others in the name of God do not know the God of humanity. If they had known the God of humanity before they know man, they would not have been killing people made in the image of God in the name of God. Youths should not allow themselves to be used for such purpose,” Adeniji said.

He confessed that a female student, Ifuoma Aya, gave him the toughest challenge during his degree programme. The lady, who obtained CGPA of 4.5, was also one of the eight graduating students that made first class.

The institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Olukoju, had while addressing those who attended the ceremony, vouched for the eight students who graduated with first class. Specifically, he applauded Adeniji, the founder and leader of the Royal Family, a group committed to character building; Bayonle Akingbule, Aya, Juliana Okaka and Mr. Ololade Jinadu for what he described as their leadership skills, exemplary character, Christian virtues and academic excellence.
He said, “Certainly, our best graduating student, who was well known to me as a humble and morally sound student, Mr. Abdulazeez Adeniji (simply known to me as “Azeez”), truly epitomises the Caleb spirit and the ideals that you were taught in our Leadership Academy.

“Azeez and others such as Akingbule, Aya, Jinadu and Okaka, conducted themselves in a manner that convinced me that there is hope for this country.”

He also advised all the 231 graduating students to unleash all the virtues that had been deposited into them on the wider society, with a view to making the country better.
Giving a breakdown of the result, Olukoju said eight earned first class honours degrees, 42 made second class upper, 41 graduated in third class, while only one made a pass degree.

He challenged the graduating students “to apply your knowledge to the transformation of your world. But note that, as you aspire, you will perspire before you can acquire. It is only the truly outstanding in character and learning – the six-o’-clock people – that will rule the roost. But do not forget your Alma Mater. You must be driven by a galvanising slogan: “Love Caleb and Live It”!

However, former Nigerian Ambassador to Germany, Prof. Akinjide Osuntokun, while delivering the convocation lecture, said the Federal Government had failed to make life better for Nigerians.

Specifically, he said the ruling People’s Democratic Party had not fulfilled its promises to the people. Osuntokun, who spoke on the theme, ‘Electoral Democracy and Political Realignment in Nigeria,’ said the 14 years of governance by the PDP had revealed that the party lacked the idea to revive the nation’s economy.

“When the PDP came into power in 1999, we were told that in six months, there would be regular electricity supply and power generation would hit 10,000 mega watts. Neither of these promises has been met. Our hospitals have remained consulting clinics, our roads have become death traps, our infrastructure have remained backward and almost non-existent,” he noted

He also noted that since 1951, elections had not been free and fair. To reverse the trend, Osuntokun said voter education should be promoted, while fool-proof electoral strategies should be adopted.

He said, “Elections have been held three times since 1999 and all attempts to change course have failed because elections in Nigeria are neither fair nor free. The poorer the party performs, the greater the votes they award themselves at election time. We must build a Nigerian economy in which politics will be a vocation rather than a profession. This was what it was in the past and we must go back to the past to guarantee our future.

“We cannot continue like this. We must change course, lest the American prediction that Nigeria will disintegrate in 2015 become a self-fulfilling prophecy. If the APC leadership is selfless, patriotic, self-sacrificing and driven by the desire to rescue and salvage the nation, it would put aside all ethnic, personal, regional and religious considerations in selecting its leaders and in fielding the combination that will challenge the PDP in 2015.”

Why I set up a college in UK - Chief Segun Phillips

A Sociology graduate of the University of Lagos, Chief Segun Phillips, has said that the urge to contribute to internationalisation of education and contribute to human development informed his decision to establish Peacock College, a professional and degree-awarding institution, in the United Kingdom.

Phillips added that the urge to prove to foreigners that not all Nigerians are crooks also contributed to his setting up of the institution, which has received the International Student Association accreditation to deliver professional and academic degree and postgraduate programmes.

The UK-based college, established in 2012, has also been approved as a candidate for accreditation by the British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education.

Speaking with newsmen on Monday, Phillips, who retired from the Federal Civil Service to launch into tour and travel business, advised Nigerians who desire to be on their own never to entertain fear.

“When we started the institution, I knew we would not have problems getting accreditation because Europeans respect laws and if you can follow their rules to the letter, where you come from would not matter. That is why we are excited at the progress so far made by the institution,” he said.

He explained that with the accreditation granted by the institution by the ISA, the college had qualified to offer certificate, diploma and degree programmes in its main campus in London.

The college Principal, Mr. Zenon Adamek, a Briton, in an online statement, added that the college was able to achieve this feat because of the hard work, transparency and its passion for development.

He added that Peacock has been drawing upon the experience and expertise of academics, professionals working in the pertinent industries and colleagues with wealth of practice and knowledge to deliver professional academic programmes in Business Management, Health and Social Care, Hospitality Travel and Tours and Information Technology.

13 Business Ideas For 2013

13 BUSINESSES YOU CAN START WITH MINIMAL CAPITAL

1. FISH FARMING
Fish is the cheapest source of animal protein and because of its low cholesterol level it is medically recommended as a good food for both the young and elderly.

Fish farming in Nigeria is currently a very lucrative business and this is boosted by the continuous rise in the demand for Catfish. It is an Untapped Goldmine waiting for those who can see.

The demand for fish according to the federal department of fisheries (FDF) was 2.1 million tons in 2007 while domestic production was 600,000 tons.
This deficit was partly augmented by massive importation of fish of about 900,000 tons valued at over $800 million dollars. This is a big drawback on our scarce foreign exchange.
This still left a huge deficit of 600,000 tons, hence the concerted effort to ensure self-sufficiency in fish production through aquaculture in Nigeria.
The demand for Fish in the country is currently estimated at about 2.66 million tons annually, as against the local annual production of just 780,000 metric tons, giving a demand-supply gap of about 1.8 million tons. It is very clear that the demand is far higher than supply. What do you see as an entrepreneur? Business opportunity!

According to the Norwegian Ambassador to Nigeria, “Nigeria imports fish especially stock fish from Norway, worth over N109.2 billion Naira ($700million dollars) annually”.

In a May 2012 report, the Chairman of Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON) Rivers State chapter, Dr. Awoteinm George revealed that “Nigeria produces just 40 percent of the total Fish consumed in the country”. In other words, a 60 percent local production market is waiting for entrepreneurs to fill.

Aquaculture has been estimated to have the potential of producing 2.5 million tons, which if fully harnessed will almost satisfy the local demand for fish in the country. You could take opportunity of this high demand for fish and start a fish farm today. This could be that business that would make you a millionaire.

The truth is agro-based businesses are very profitable because they meet man’s basic need-Food. You could start and operate your fish pond right in your backyard, compound or garage. What are you waiting for? Fish and Grow Rich in 2013!

2. MINI-IMPORTATION BUSINESS USING THE INTERNET
0ne business that will make a lot of smart people Millionaires this year, is the business of importing goods into Nigeria right from the comfort of your home using your computer; and if you don't have one you can operate from a Cafe.
This business is simple and the start up capital is very minimal, yet with a high profit margin. you can start this business with as little as 20, 000 naira.

All you need do is to carry out your research so as to know where to buy, what to buy and how to sell your goods.

Where To Import
The internet has made life and business simple, and websites like WWW.Alibaba.com and aliexpress.com has made it easy for smart entrepreneurs to go into the importation business.

It is now possible to buy goods at the comfort of your home working with your computer and get it shipped to you here in Nigeria.

There are lots of items on display on these websites that you can easily import into the country and sell them for good profit.

and don't worry about payment method; thanks to GTB and UBA, you can easily pay for your goods online using the GTB Naira master Card or UBA AfriCard. These cards are accepted on these websites.

What To Buy
There are lots of inexpensive products on display on aliexpress.com that you can import and sell at a hundred percent profit. There are products like jeweleries that go for as low as $2 dollars; you can sell at 1000 naira (which is a give away).
The most important thing is to study your environment to find out what will sell fast, then import small quantity to test the market.
How To Sell Your Imported Goods
A lot of people don't like selling, but ironically life itself is a market place and to survive you've got to sell something; even a job applicant to an organization will have to market his potentials and credentials in order to get the job, and when he is employed he gets paid because he sells his Time and Skills to the organization. Even in a relationship a guy will have to market himself and prove that he (the product) is the best for the girl.

Now selling your imported goods is just simply the application of strategy; there is no effective sales without a good strategy. one very effective sales strategy you could use is to Create a network for your business...create a chain of sellers that will sell your goods at a commission. This strategy will enable you to sell your stuffs fast.

12-Year-Old Girl Takes $20,000 To School In The US

A 12-year-old recently had quite the show-and-tell at school: According to the Detroit News, she brought a backpack stuffed with $20,000 in cash. Police, who declined to name the girl, said the student received it from a child who lives across the street from her in Taylor, outside of Detroit.

Word got around at the local Sixth Grade Academy that the girl was handing out cash to her friends. That’s when the principal stepped in and called the police.

“The school district called us and said a 12-year-old student had a backpack full of money,” Taylor Chief of Police Mary Sclabassi said. “The principal became aware of it when she heard the student was giving money away to friends.

They brought in the student, secured the backpack and retrieved the money she had given away. This is a real first for me.” Commenters on the Detroit News website were also stunned by the news. Doran Hollow wrote, “That was my middle school and I never ran into anyone so generous.”

Scott Gypsy opined, “She must have been a fan of Robin Hood.” Added Brent Link, “My other thought was casino winnings. But drugs was the first one to cross my mind.

Who really keeps that kind of money under their mattress?” No word on what the neighbors were doing with that amount of cash around the house, but undoubtedly they will be glad to get it back.

NYSC Female Corper Decamped For Refusal To Wear Trousers, Church Queries Order!!

Reactions have started trailing the decamping of

2013 Batch A, female corps member, Ms Tolu Ekundayo, by the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Ogun State for wearing skirt at the Shagamu orientation camp.

In a press conference organised by Ekundayo’s church, Faith Revival Apostolic Church, FRAC, in Lagos, the expelled corps member said she was asked to leave the camp at about 11.00pm on March 8, 2013 by the Ogun State NYSC Co-ordinator, for her refusal to put on trousers.

She explained that her refusal to wear trousers was not in

disobedience to NYSC authorities but in line with her belief and faith in God.

Also speaking, Apostle Paul Adenuga condemned the manner in which Ekundayo was expelled from the camp in the dead of the night without considering her safety and called on the Director-General of NYSC and the federal government to look into the matter before it gets out of hand.

“I call on Nigerians, mostly Christians that stand for the truth, not only to jointly condemn this barbaric and bestial act but to engage in constructive dialogue with the concerned authority for the change of such policy if it is official.”

Interesting Things About IBB, Nigeria's Military President

Born during the World War II on 17 August, 1941 in Minna, Niger State into a humble family, his father, Muhammad Babangida, was an Islamic scholar. By 14, his mother, Aisha, had died and IBB was orphaned. Babangida, who joined the army at 21, is neither Hausa nor Fulani but of Gwari ethnicity. This claim has been debated.

Widely known to have married the late paragon of elegance, Maryam Babangida, IBB's first marriage has never been publicized. Maryam's mother, Hajia Asabe Halima Mohammed came from Niger State while her father, an Igbo man, Leonard Nwanonye Okogwu hailed from Asaba, Delta State where she was born in 1948. At 20, she married IBB. When she died in 2009 in the United States from complications of ovarian cancer (one of the deadliest forms of malignancies), IBB, a romantic lover till the end, was by her side. Nigeria's Senate President, David Mark, broke down into tears upon hearing her demise.

In July 1966, a group of Northern soldiers mutinied. Some of them were IBB, Sani Abacha and Garba Duba (IBB's classmate and Maryam's cousin, he later became a lieutenant general, Bauchi State Governor, Sokoto State Military Administrator and Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy. He is now a Non-Executive Director of Honeywell Flour Mills Plc. and First Bank Nigeria Plc.)

On January 14th, 1994, Abacha announced the cancellation of the Dedicated Accounts set up by General Babangida, and appointed a Panel of Inquiry headed by Pius Okigbo, an economist of international repute to look into the operations of the Central Bank of Nigeria where the Dedicated Accounts were operated. In its report that was submitted to Abacha in September 1994, the panel revealed that out of $12.4 billion that went into that account, $12.2 billion could not be accounted for. IBB would later vehemently deny he was responsible for the money developing wings of a B2 stealth bomber and flying into the far ends of the Milky Way.

The correspondent of the Financial Times, William Keeling, who was first to come out with the story had been speedily deported from Nigeria by IBB. The legendary Gani Fawehinmi would fight the cause of the $12.2 billion till he breathed his last. And it's like the case has been buried with him. (Or when was the last time you heard anyone talking about it?) Here is what the late fiery lawyer said of IBB: IBB has declared war against Nigeria. Nigerians too must get set for war. A situation whereby one man aggregates to himself totally the legislative power, executive and judicial power unabashed...is clear-cut dictatorship. If you say this is the policy at breakfast, it will not be the policy at lunch. Babangida has killed the Army. The Airforce cannot fly. The Navy is a shell of itself. I will be puerile to believe him. I will be a simpleton to take him by his words. I will be completely insane to trust a man whose words mean nothing to him.

Okigbo remarked that Babangida and Abdulkadir Ahmed, the Central Bank Governor, accounted to no one, and the records of much of the extrabudgetary expenditure could not be found in the Central Bank. Well, remember he also tried to rule again. He could have succeeded fa. But he actually still rules Nigeria in a very surreptitious way, many of his boys are in Jonathan's government or the current ruling party. We all know the Senate President and the 3rd most powerful person in the country. His former ADC Col. Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (who effected the arrest of Buhari in the coup) is now the National Security Adviser and insecurity is now a thing of the past in Nigeria (no be so?). Dasuki was also once the former Managing Director of the Nigerian Security Printing & Minting Company Limited under Obasanjo.

In 2001, When former President Obasanjo tried to look into the $12.4 billion that disappeared under IBB's regime, it was said that all records with the Central Bank of Nigeria that were pertaining to the fraud had DISAPPEARED. But in 2005 when the House of Representatives wanted to impeach the President, the records suddenly REAPPEARED. Why? Those in Obasanjo's camp felt IBB was behind the impeachment saga. #Naija.Film.To.Gun.Ni.Olohun.E.Ni.Duro.Wo.Tan...LOL!

Nigeria's 6th military ruler also made himself the Defence Minister was one of the few soldiers been involved in all the successful coups in Nigeria. As far back as July 1975, IBB, Ibrahim Taiwo (later gruesomely murdered outside Offa, Kwara State), Abdullahi Mohammed (later Major General and Chief of Staff to the Presidency for 10 years under Obasanjo & Yar'adua), Lt. Col. Shehu Yar'adua (died in Abakaliki Prisons), Lt. Col. Muhammadu Buhari (later head of state), Muktar Mohammed and others orchestrated the coup that ousted Yakubu Gowon. They were successful and IBB was became the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps Commander but would later be accused of buying old tanks and passing them off as new, making huge profits.

After the assassination of Murtala Mohammed a day before Valentine's Day in 1976 by Buka Suka Dimka, IBB (then a Colonel) was ordered by Lt. General Theophilus Danjuma (now a billionaire) to remove Dimka from the radio station, and he told him to take an okada (motorcycle) to avoid detection. That would be a very dangerous task for him as he was also on the hit list of the coup plotters, and funnily, he was a very good friend of Dimka, one of those who graced his wedding to the elegant Maryam Mohammed Ndidi King (nee Okogwu) in September 1969 (Aisha, Mohammed, Aminu & Halima were the products of the marriage). IBB would later say that he escaped death by luck when he suddenly told his driver to take another route in Ikoyi. (Max Siollun in his book explains better, see references on our website). Instead of taking an okada, IBB went to the house of his air force friend, Hamza Abdullahi, dropped the okada and borrowed his car. IBB would later make Abdullahi minister of the Federal Capital Territory (paddypaddy don kill us!). Before attempting to flush out Dimka and others, he placed a call across to his wife, Maryam, to soothe her frazzled nerves.

Upon reaching the station, IBB was not allowed to enter by Dimka's sentinel until the rifle-armed Dimka gave his permission. IBB, unaware of the fact that Murtala had been killed, strutted in unarmed and requested they speak in private. According to IBB, the rebels were in a state of stupor, absolutely intoxicated. He then spoke to Dimka in Hausa as a family friend, calming him and reassuring he was without a gun. IBB would even use his sugar-coated tongue to effect: he told him that even if he lost his life at Dimka's hands, he would be happy that it was to someone who would surely take care of Maryam and her kids. A cautious Dimka brushed off the idea and told IBB he was on the death list but did not want him killed, and that he could have opened fire on the Evil Genius immediately he arrived. They continued 'gisting' until IBB left the station to discuss an 'amnesty' for the coup plotters with Danjuma, leaving Dimka behind with a promise to be back in the afternoon. Dimka waited but the next scenario was bloody. IBB returned with heavily-armed soldiers who engaged Dimka's men in a terrific gun fight. In the confusion that followed, Dimka escaped in circumstances that are still unclear. IBB was traumatized that his close friends would want to assassinate him because they felt he was too young to be in the Supreme Military Council (SMC). He felt betrayed and from that point, he would become hardened, trusting no one. Omo Omoruyi says of him: 'He did not trust anyone and became more distrustful over time.' His success in dislodging the plotters launched him into national limelight, and for the very first time, Nigerians heard of a name they will never forget in a hurry: Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.
