WORK-STUDY: LENDING A HAND, INFLUENCING STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

The average Nigerian student is wrought with different challenges in the bid to get an education. Most of the times, these challenges are more financial than intellectual. There have been cases of students who were bright and passed through public school with flying colors, but could not afford to purchase Jamb forms. You find most times that the lady selling recharge cards at the junction, or the boy who is a conductor on a molue was forced to do what they do because they needed to make enough money to go back to school. Not every child is from a wealthy background, and so the education which some treat with so much levity is a prized possession worth fighting for to some.

I have no intention to mull over the sufferings of the “masses” in this article, my main aim is to let every student struggling with financial stability know that there are opportunities available on and off campus to support themselves while in school without having to lose their dignity in the process as is common with a majority of students in tertiary institutions.

                            

A work study program is naturally designed to help participants get acquainted with the rigors of balancing both academics and work. Thus, most institutions consider the student’s academic standing before allowing him/her be a part of the program. At the University of Lagos for instance, to participate in the work study program, a student must have attained at least a 3.5 G.P.A after his/her first year at the university. This assures the authorities that the student is indeed intellectually capable to withstand the pressures that might come with combining work and studies. Preference is usually given to students who are from quite humble backgrounds who otherwise have little or no support from their home front, and who are industrious enough to want to work while schooling to take the stress off those at home. Currently, I can only categorically name the University of Lagos as one of the foremost institutions in Nigeria that operates a very functional work-study program. Students are placed to work in different facilities on campus, and are paid a reasonable wage on an hourly basis. Time sheets are given to the students, which must be signed duly after each day at their place of work. The work study program helps the student in more ways than one. Apart from the fact that such a student would be privy to important information on student initiatives inside and outside the school, the student also is privileged to have firsthand information on scholarship positions outside the country and could be a beneficiary of such.

A lot of the above depends on the willingness of the student to be involved in school-related activities. A lot of students sign up for the work-study program and never see it to the end because they feel the work is too “boring”, or they are ashamed to be seen by their fellow students working on campus, they feel “uncool” trying to make ends meet, and thus shy away from being beneficiaries of opportunities that sometimes are life changing in effect. As a participant of the work study program at the University of Lagos in the not-so-distant past, I was able to get the opportunity to work with the most efficient people I have ever met. Posted to work at the University of Lagos Main Library, I was glad to be surrounded by people who lived and worked for the love of books! (Nerdy, I know).  Combining the work study and my academics was not really a problem because I was surrounded by a wealth of knowledge, and as a student of History, I couldn’t have been in a better place. That aside, I realized that the work study program did a lot of good for students. Apart from providing them with additional funds to cope with the financial demands that come with getting an education, it also provides them with the skills they need to survive in a typical working environment. I can say for a fact that majority of the people I came in contact with during the work study got steady jobs outside the university with the help of the people they had met during their time working in school. Others even got ideas of business ventures to embrace outside of their initial course of study in the university.

More tertiary institutions should have work study programs that harness the student’s abilities to study and work at the same time. Apart from paying these students, institutions could experience growth using these students in the appropriate manner. Now imagine a scenario where we have universities that pay students to be research assistants to seasoned academics, imagine the wealth of knowledge that would be generated and the impact same would have on the development of tertiary education in Nigeria. It would also make institutions financially independent. It is simply helping students to help the institution, giving students who are struggling with the payment of their fees the opportunity to be able to do so and still contribute to the greatness of their school.

4. Nuclear Engineer

Gov Okorocha Orders Unemployed Graduates Back to Farms, offers N50m interest free loans.

In a bid to decongest unemployment situation that has formed a hydra-headed monster in Nigeria at large, Governor Rochas Anayo Okorocha of Imo State has ordered unemployed graduates in the State to get ready to be fully engaged in the farm land acquired by government in each of the autonomous community among 637 communities in the state.
 This action seemed to have frustrated thousands of degree and certificate-carrying unemployed graduates who emptied into the state capital to witness and be part of the Youth-Must-Work program unfolded yesterday.
Many graduates who were in Owerri the state capital with photocopies of their credentials for civil service jobs and possible employment in the state work force went home disappointed as no white collar job was to be made available to them.
Governor Okorocha made this known yesterday at Heroes Square Owerri while launching a programme he called “youth must work”.

He advised the youth to ensure that they fill the farm designated for the exercise adding that state government for the exercise will soon collaborate with House of Assembly to enact a law that would prosecute unemployed youths any moment from now.

The Governor charged Ministry of Agriculture to work in synergy with Community Government Council (CGC) to ensure that at least a hectare of farm land is established in each of the communities where youths will be gainfully employed adding that unemployment situation will be a thing of past after the exercise as those who are not interesting in Agric sector shall be engaged in super markets and oil companies among viable working carriers in the state.

According to Governor, five billion naira interest free loan will be set aside to cushion the plights and challenges of the unemployed youths. Governor Okorocha further approved ten thousand naira monthly stipend for each corps-member serving in the state which he said will be paid to them via CGC.

He further expressed dissatisfaction that the alleged sixty seven billion naira mismanaged by the immediate past administration would have gone a long way to arrest unemployment in Imo State, maintaining that EFCC should do further investigation on the said fraud.

Speaking further, Okorocha said that he has allocated about N5m each to members of the Imo State House of Assembly for employment purposes.

He also promised to procure at least five hundred cabs for the youth who might have interest in transportation business. He further said that in the Private Partnership Program, PPP, people shall be posted to hotels and supermarkets where they will be paid by the respective employers.

Earlier, the Imo State Coordinator of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) thanked the Governor for organizing such exercise adding that youth will always support him in all ramifications.

Reacting on the matter, a frontline youth leader and the National Secretary of Imo Youth Assembly, Comrade Precious Nwadike stated that “Okorocha should not toy and deceive Imo youths as he is also a graduate as we are meant to understand and should not treat the unemployed ones some of who graduated with better qualifications than him in the manner he is going now. Everybody cannot be Governor and that is why some of us are not governors today otherwise we are eminently qualified to be governors going by our academic qualification. We feel pained in us that Governor Okorocha who hails from Orlu zone could mobilize the youths of Imo State just to tell stories of how governance has failed in the state”
According to Nwadike who is also the President of OrluZurumee Youth Assembly, “we had earlier advised Governor Okorocha to engage the N10, 000 job beneficiaries rather than creating 15,000 jobs for another set of unemployed graduates and that is our position both at Orluzurumee Youth Assembly and Imo Youth Assembly. We are graduates and not market women as such we should not be told certain stories politicians tell artisans and market women. The idea of posting our young girls to hotels is another way of encouraging graduates to go into prostitution at a time like this when the Governor should make frantic effort to revamp the Imo State industrial layout at Onitsha road by simply making the roads accessible and reducing cost of production and encourage Imolites to come home and invest. The youths who benefited from the 10,000 jobs created by the last administration should be reconsidered than this new gospel from the present administration. We should not be toys in the hands of our leaders”

Okorocha Launches Youth Empowerment Programme

In a bid to tackle the high rate of unemployment in Imo State, Governor Rochas Okorocha has launched the Youth Must Work programme aimed at engaging and empowering all unemployed youths in the state.

The programme which was launched at the Heroes Square in Owerri, the Imo State capital, South East Nigeria brought together over 10,000 unemployed graduates from all the 27 local government areas in the state.

The programme is aimed at bringing all unemployed youths in the state together, identifying their different areas of specialisation and empowering them with the necessary tools which will get them fully engaged before they are gainfully employed in their desired jobs.

While decrying the high rate of unemployment in the country, the governor said corruption, selfishness and primitive accumulation of wealth by political leaders had been the major cause of unemployment in the country.

He added that as part of the action plan mapped out for the Youth Must Work programme, the state government had set aside an interest-free loan of N5 billion for thrift arrangement which will aid the youths to set up integrated farming in their communities.

Mr. Okorocha said that government would also sponsor 100 youths to South Africa to train as pilots and 500 of them to Singapore for entrepreneurial training.

Governor Okorocha stated that one of the cardinal objectives of the Youth Must Work programme is to develop the economy of the state through agriculture for which the state government had provided one hectare of land in each of the 560 communities in the state.

1. Identify your femaleness.
Find that part of you that makes you a special female specifically. Do you have pretty eyes? A lyrical voice? Flowing hair? Find something that you can look at your feminine side and say now that is something woman about me. It doesn't have to be an appearance characteristic, but definitely something men just can't pull off like you do.

2. Find a strong woman you believe in.
Emulate her. Look to Audrey Hepburn, Mother Teresa, Hillary Clinton, your mother, your best friend's big sister, anyone! Find a woman you appreciate. Next time you need to be strong think to yourself, "What would (insert name) do?"

3. Cut out all the drama.
It can be hard but confident strong women don't appreciate gossip and over the top emotional situations. You can be a tender, emotional, easily moved woman. That does not mean you need to talk about other people's business. When gossip comes up in conversation think classy and don't contribute.

4. Start talking to people and be proud of what you have to say.
Confidence is key. It can be very difficult when you are a reserved woman, but speaking up changes everything. Make conversation with strangers (in an appropriate, non-threatening manner) and stay involved in current events and newsworthy topics to help make wise up-to-date chit chat. When speaking to those you already know speak more than you usually do, but give people a chance to speak about themselves as well. (No one likes to do anything more than talk about themselves and taking that away is dangerous.) Remember to be proud, patient, pensive when speaking. You don't want to come off as cheeky or boastful so thoroughly thinking through your statements can be helpful.

5. Kiss the past goodbye.
If you're doing an internal make over than wiping your past clean can be a great mental break. Take a step back and think to yourself, "I woke up this morning a powerful female. I'm staying that way no matter what comes my way, and anything I did yesterday can just melt away. I'm not doing that again." And if your past ever does come back to bite you, supply an apology from a place of both humility and strength. If you feel the need to let these people know you're moving on tell them so. They may not agree and the band-aid formed may not hold, but you will be happier internally if you stay strong, don't lash out, and keep your cool.

6. Keep your convictions.
Don't run from fights. Wanting to avoid conflict is a natural reaction to any issue, but fleeing from it doesn't always help. Speak what's on your mind in a civil manner, even if you're opponent is not being as lady-like. Tell them why you believe you are correct, justify that statement, and give them an opportunity to speak openly. If you discover you are correct and they lay down walk away empowered, but be gracious about your victory. If you discover you were wrong in your beliefs politely explain what you were wrong about, apologize if necessary, and walk away guilt free. (Over apologizing can be painful, so be calm and remain strong.) If you come to a dead tie that remains unresolved: drop it. If it's brought back up, handle it. But don't go searching for an issue.

7. Admit your flaws. Be open and content with things you are not good at, laugh about photos of yourself you find unflattering, and smile about positions you did not achieve/ contests you did not win etc. Be content not being perfect. Women who try to be exempt from flaws crumble faster than those with too many to count.

8. Be happy having enemies.
From a young age everyone must learn that some people just won't like you. Once you know you are disliked by someone (whether it was provoked or not) understand that and know they aren't worth your time. Don't force a friendship to happen, it will do more harm than good.

9. Handle insults and compliments with grace.
Take every comment made about you as lightly as possible. Appreciate flattering statements with a simple un-exaggerated "thank you" and ignore not so flattering comments.

Akpabio Bags Best Governor In Africa Award

Akwa Ibom State governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has bagged the best Governor in Africa Award from an Accra-based Africa Development Magazine, for his development strides in the state.



Presenting the award in Accra, Ghana, renowned Ghanaian Professor, Walter Alhassan, described Governor Akpabio as an icon of democracy and a good example of what leadership should represent.

He said that available and verifiable facts singled out Chief Akpabio as a pride of Africa, worthy of emulation.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Soma Brown recounted the numerous achievements of the Akpabio administration in Akwa Ibom State, but particularly noted the free, compulsory and qualitative education policy; free medical care for pregnant women, children and the aged; and the massive infrastructural investment as key reasons for the award conferred on Governor Akpabio.

Receiving the award, Governor Akpabio, represented by his Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, thanked the magazine for considering him for the global honour.

Meet Nigeria's First Female Rear Admiral

ITUNU HOTONU, Nigeria's First Female Rear Admiral

She is smart, well-dressed and very articulate. And yes, she is so neat that you do not have to wonder why many fall in love with the navy because of their spotlessly clean uniforms. Enter REAR ADMIRAL ITUNU HOTONU, the first female to attain the rank of a Rear Admiral in the Nigerian Navy, one of Africa's most sophisticated navies. That makes her the highest-ranking female officer in the Nigerian Armed Forces as her rank is equivalent to a two-star-general in the Nigerian Army. Rear Admiral Itunu Hotonu is the second female two-star general produced in the Nigerian Armed Forces. The first was Major-General Aderonke Kale who retired in 1997.



While Kale was with the medical corps of the Nigerian Army and rose through the ranks, Hotonu, a trained architect, became an expert in naval logistics. Her expertise and skills cover a wide area: military, strategic planning and communications, crisis management and communications, command and international relations.

The name Hotonu is of the Fon tribe and Fon people are also found in Benin Republic where they founded the Kingdom of Dahomey around 1600. The kingdom was famous for the Dahomey Amazons, an all-female military regiment of the kingdom.

BIRTH AND EARLY DAYS
Born 54 years ago in Badagry, Lagos State (18th January, 1959), she is the first child in a family of four girls. She stated that her father raised her as a boy, and even at a tender age, she was already doing all the 'manly' chores in the house, such as repairing sockets and driving vehicles. She also talked of a superb childhood where everyone encouraged her to aim for the highest goals and achievements.

EDUCATION AND NAVAL TRAINING
In 1985, she graduated from the University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka, Enugu State where she read architecture, after which she worked for two years as an architect after which she went for her professional exams. After that, she made attempts to join the army but she was rejected as they told her there was no place for ladies in its engineering corps. Disappointed and feeling dejected, it was until someone hinted her to try the Navy, where recruitment take place irregardless of the gender. Then she tried, got enlisted in 1985 and today, she is a Rear Admiral. She said in an interview with the Sun of the tough training:

It was tough training in the Navy

Training was tough and the best way I can describe it to you is to multiply what they put you through during National Youth Service Corps by 20 times and then you get an idea of what the training was like. I enjoyed it but wao, it was tough. But the good thing was that at the end of it all you come out fitter than you have ever been in your life.

You come out more disciplined and you come out with a commitment to keep fit.

So in all, life was very interesting while I was undergoing my training as a naval officer. First of all, you know I had done NYSC so I had the creamy taste of military training. But the real Navy basic training was much more than that, and the thing is that at the end of it all you know it taught me a lot of discipline and it gave me strength that I didn't know I had, physical strength; so it was very good. Even though the training was not easy, the truth is that after surviving the first few days when you are acheing all over, you actually get used to it. I mean the human body is very resilient and at the same time interesting and you can actually train yourself to get used to it.

If somebody offends in a squadron they will punish the whole squadron, I couldn't understand it. I was like if somebody offends and the person owns up why should you punish all of us? But one of the instructors told me that look, if you are in a hostile situation may be in a war situation you have to look out for everybody and that the mistake of one person can cause everybody's life because your survival depends on you as a group.


MILITARY POSITIONS

-Director of Projects, Naval Headquarters

-Commander, Lagos Logistics Depot

-Command Logistics Officer, Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command, Calabar

-Managing Director, Nigerian Navy Post Service Housing Scheme (NNPSHS), Karshi, Nassarawa State where she was able to build and complete over 1,000 houses, with the first 460 completed within a year. Under her administration, water reserve capacity of the estate was increased from 60,000 litres to a whopping 600,000 litres.

BECOMING NIGERIA'S FIRST FEMALE REAR ADMIRAL

In December 2012, she was decorated by President Goodluck Jonathan and Mrs. Josephine Anenih as the very first female Rear Admiral in the history of the Nigerian Navy. She was one of the eleven Navy Commodores promoted to the rank of a Rear Admiral. She is the very first female Rear Admiral not only in Nigeria but in the entire West African sub-region. She was promoted alongside 22 other officers from the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Air Force to the ranks of Rear Admirals and Air Vice Marshals respectively. The venue was the Nigerian Army Headquarters Officers' Mess in Abuja.

A delighted President Jonathan would later comment about the females making waves in the Nigerian Armed Forces. He said: “So, when will I see Nigerian women flying jets? We will want to start training women at the NDA to become regular combatant officers, those who are strong enough to face the rigours, in some years to come, maybe the Commander of the Presidential Air Fleet (PAF) can be a woman.”

Actually, I think it will be very cool if a woman commandeers the President's Air Fleet. As in! 

She says: Well, I am happy about my promotion to the rank of a rear admiral in the Nigerian Navy and the fact that it is during my life time that females are now been recruited into the Nigerian Defence Academy to train as Regular Combatant Officers. And it is very good for women, young girls coming after me came out of my promotion to the rank of a Rear Admiral, I can only say I thank God. I feel humbled. I never for once in my life thought my name would be linked to the first set of female regular combatant cadets. I am just so thankful, I'm just so overwhelmed and I'm so humbled.


ACHIEVEMENTS

It will interest you to know that her becoming a female Rear Admiral is actually one of many firsts. Right from primary school, she was always leading her class and when she joined the military, she continued to shine and recorded the following achievements:

-First female military officer to attend the National Defence College (formerly National War College). Owing to her outstanding performance, she became the first female officer to be recommended as a Directing Staff (Instructor) at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Jaji, Kaduna. She was also the very first female architect in all the arms of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

-When the Nigerian Navy was celebrating its 54th anniversary, Rear Admiral Hotonu won the Most Outstanding Performance Award as the Managing Director of the Nigerian Navy Post Service Housing Scheme (NNPSHS).

-Best Overall Graduating Student in a class of 73 students at the National Defence College, Abuja (2003-2004) as a member of Course 12. She received the Commander-in-Chief’s Prize and the Commandant’s Prize for the Best Research. Great things happen when women have focus!

She also completed the NOWA Educational Centre complete with a creche, nursery, primary and junior secondary school (with boarding facilities).

OTHER APPOINTMENTS AND HONOURS

-In May 2011, she was appointed as a Member of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into election violence in Akwa Ibom State and the civil unrest in some Northern states.

-In 2011, she was invited by the Liberian Government as a Special Guest to mentor females in the Liberian Armed Forces.

-In January 2012, she was honoured at the 17th THISDAY Annual Awards for Excellence.

Affectionately called Mama in the office, she is happily married.

HER WORDS

While delivering her speech at the Sixth Bowen University Convocation Lecture, she complained about the dilapidated state of infrastructure in Nigeria:

“My journey from United Kingdom to Lagos, took only 6:20hours. The journey was 3000 kilometers to Nigeria. It is a pity that my trip to Iwo from Lagos, a journey of 200 kilometers took six hours”. This was the condition of our infrastructure in Nigeria.

“We need to pray for the development of Nigeria. Cursing and criticizing the country would not help matter. It would only worsen it. Criticism will only bring the country down. Nigerians should not look down on the country. We are the changes and we are part of the changes we want in Nigeria”.

-"Women who want to be up there must work for it. It is not a joke, you must show that you can do it. -At the 100 Years of the Nigerian Woman -Achieving 50/50 by 2020, Lagos, April 2013.

-I had a dream to get to the top of my career and nothing was going to let me go off that dream. Sometimes it looked like a distant dream, sometime it would even fade to a dot in the horizon, sometime I would want to give up but the good thing was that I had a lot of supportive people who believed in me, people who, when the going got really rough, said to me, no, you cannot give up.

-The major challenge, I must be very honest with you, is the fact that you know you meet a lot of men who wonder what you are doing in their territory and you have to spend everyday of your life proving that you should be here. For me there is nothing in this constitution that says I am not a full fledged citizen of this country. I don't see it anywhere, but you see, there are still people who still have issues with that, and such people vent their frustration on you. But you have to be resilient enough and claim your place because nobody is going to give it to you.

As a matter of fact I don't have anything against making my hair. It's just that I had very long hair and I will just cut it when I want to and grow it back when I want to. Then one of the times when I cut it, my husband to be then said ha, I like this hair and he never let me grow it back and I got use to it and apparently it's different and people tell me they like it so I kept it that way and it has automatically become my trademark.

CONCLUSION
Appointed the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Navy Holdings Limited, which included all the commercial ventures of the Navy, such as the Post Service Housing Scheme, hotels, suites, marine services, microcredit finance scheme and so on (January 2011-January 2013) and without any iota of doubt, her achievements will surely spur on many young Nigerians who also have lofty dreams in the face of countless obstacles. For the young and ambitious females, she has this to tell you: They must have faith in themselves and they must have self-discipline. They must have strength of character. They must never allow themselves to be intimidated by anybody because believe me people will try but it depends on how they handle it. They must never, ever compromise themselves. That is the advice I have for them.

Focus on what you want to do and pursue it. Never abandon your dream no matter how tough. Learn to rise up each time you fall because falling is real. Hard work is the key you need to unlock success....stand your ground and never let go your dream.

Lol Principal flees town after impregnating Army officer’s daughter in Kogi

A Principal of one Baptist High School, Ekinrin/Adde, in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Mr. Ajayi Ajibulu has allegedly impregnated one of his students (undisclosed name) . The secret between the Principal and the young girl was exposed after the principal’s letter via the girl to a doctor who was to carry out an abortion on her was seen by her (the girl) female friend.

Scientist Proved that eating of Bananas help produce more sons

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Women can influence the gender of their child with what they eat before they conceive, according to new research that lends scientific support to age-old superstitions about pregnancy.

The discovery shows higher calorie intake prior to conception can significantly increase the chances of having a son while women on restricted diets are more likely to produce daughters.

Scientists at Britain's Oxford and Exeter Universities, who studied eating habits of 740 women during their first-time pregnancies, say that their findings seem to back certain traditional links between diet and gender while disproving others.

"We were able to confirm the old wives' tale that eating bananas and so having a high potassium intake was associated with having a boy, as was a high sodium intake," research leader Fiona Mathews, a specialist in mammalian biology at Exeter University, told the Guardian newspaper.

"But the old take about drinking a lot of milk to have a girl doesn't seem to hold up. In fact, more calcium meant they were again more likely to have a boy."

Mathews said the study pointed to a simple technique to influencing the chances of a male birth: Eating a bowl of cereal for breakfast.

"If you want a boy, eat a healthy diet with a high calorie intake, including breakfast," she told New Scientist magazine.

"Of women eating cereals daily, 59 percent had boys, compared with only 43 percent who bore boys in the group eating less than a bowlful per week."

The researchers said that a higher calorie intake prior to conception can increase the chances of having a son from ten to 11 boys in every 20 births, according to the study published in the Proceeding of the Royal Society B.

They said it could explain why male births in richer countries are experiencing a slight reduction.

Pastor Olukoya of MFM Splashes N40m on 77 Graduates with First Class

In his usual style of rewarding academic excellence, the General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Dr. Daniel Olukoya, has splashed N40 million on members of the church who graduated with first class honours degree from different universities across the country.

The event which is third in the series made the 77 graduates smile home with N 500,000 each.

The previous first class graduates went home with a car each, but this year the number rose from 15 to 77 so Dr. Olukoya settled for cash, which they could use to further their education or start something.


The breakdown of the graduates showed that University of Lagos (UNILAG) top the list with 12 graduates which cut across various disciplines, followed by University of Ibadan with nine of such graduates while one is from Central University College, Accra, Ghana.

Speaking at the occasion, Pastor Shade Olukoya, who presented the award praised the graduates for dedication to their academic work and serving God at the same time.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is to visit Akwa Ibom in next month, the Niger Delta Young Professionals, a non governmental group, has said. Facebook is a social networking service launched in February, 2004, with over one billion active users. The Chairman of the Niger Delta Young Professional, Mr Moses Siasia, made the announcement when he paid a courtesy visit on Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom on Friday. Siasia said that Zuckerberg had been invited as one of the guest speakers during his groups youth economic summit, scheduled to hold in Uyo from May 28 to May 29. The chairman said that young professionals from the Niger Delta were coming together to promote entrepreneurship, looking at economic challenges in the area. Siasia commended Akpabio for transforming the state through infrastructure such as good roads, healthcare and education. Responding, Akpabio told the group to put in their best in their chosen professions, adding that success could only come with hard work. The governor pledged his support towards the hosting of the summit, commending the youths for not engaging in militancy. (NAN)

KFC serves up degree course

Twenty-three employees begin BA in business management, first honours degree course in UK funded by a restaurant chain

KFC has invested £600,000 to fund half of the three-year course for 60 staff over the next five years. Tuition fees will be split 50/50 with the employee.  KFC is subjecting its zingers, popcorn chicken and BBQ rancher burgers to some academic rigour after launching a BA in business management.

The first employees with places on the course – the UK's first honours degree funded by a restaurant chain – have begun their studies in conjunction with De Montfort University in Leicester.

The firm has invested £600,000 to fund half of a three-year BA in business management for 60 restaurant managers over the next five years, with the first intake of 23 – who enrolled in January – starting work at the university on Thursday. The first intake of 23 employees will combine residential sessions at the college with full-time work.

KFC will cover the cost of the college accommodation, while the tuition fees will be split half and half between the employer and the employee. The overall cost will be £9,000 over three years, the same figure as the annual tuition fee at many universities in England.

Rival chain McDonald's launched a two-year foundation degree for its restaurant managers in 2010, combining classroom learning at a special facility in East Finchley in London with on-the-job training.

Lightning strikes SS3 pupil dead on Waec Exam day [Yesterday]

The family of a Senior Secondary School 3 female pupil of Muslim College Oworonsoki, Lagos, has been thrown into mourning after lightning struck and killed 19-year-old Celestina Farotide, who was about to start her final examination the same morning.



The victim’s father was said to be in shock and disbelief and had refused to show up to collect the corpse, saying, “It cannot be my daughter”.

The aunt of the deceased, Christiana Idowu, who described her as gentle, quiet and respectful said she saw her corpse in the hospital after the family received an emergency call from one of Celestina’s friends.

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity because she was not permitted to talk to journalists, said the incident occurred on Monday.

She said, “We had finished with the morning assembly, but some students were still coming in. Celestina had prepared her desk in readiness for the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination’s practical they were to have that morning.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that she later went to buy the food she would eat and when she was returning to her class in company with other students, tragedy struck.

The eyewitness said, “The lightning came in their direction and immediately three of the school girls fell down.

“Two of them rose up and ran and Celestina rose up too. Then the lighteningt struck the second time, and she (Celestine) fell finally on the floor and did not rise again.

‘She was immediately taken to the teachers’ staff room, where a teacher was asked to take her to the Gbagada General Hospital. It was there she was confirmed dead.”

The principal of the school was said to be away on a week-long conference in Makurdi when the incident happened but authorities of the school contacted Celestina’s grandmother at New Garage area of Lagos.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Education with her entourage were said to have visited the school on Tuesday morning.

A resident of the area, Mr. Kabiawu Babajide, who also claimed to be an alumnus of the school told our correspondent the lightning also wreaked havoc in the area.

The monarch of Oworonsoki land, Oba Bashir Oloruntodupefun, said the gods were angry because Oworosoki land had been desecrated by strangers and the government was taking over ancestral lands and selling them to non-indigenes.

He said, “It’s a pity the girl died. The circumstances surrounding her death are mysterious because the girl was never sick. From what happened, we can all see the gods are making demands.

“The shrines that should be used for sacrifices have been swept away in water. And the land we have is being sold by government officials to their friends and they send military men to threaten us.

“Government needs to give us our land back. The real Oworo is submerged in waters. We want them to help sand fill those places taken over by water because many cultural heritage has been lost. If this is done, evil will no longer occur.”
