ASUU Breaking News: FUTO To Sack Entire Academic Staff

The Senate of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) have threatened to sack all academic staff on its payroll with immediate effect on December 4, 2013, Monday, for failure to return to classrooms.

This has been confirmed by Mr. Chike Ezenwa, the Public Relations Officers (PRO) of the institution, in a telephone conversation with the Nigerian Tribune in Owerri.

According to him, the senate of the university had declared all the positions of academic staff in the institution, adding that they would be advertised starting from December 2, 2013, Monday.

The PRO further explained that the senate council had already compiled the list of vacant positions in the school, adding that who were willing to resume would be adequately protected.

As concerns resuming the teaching process, the following press release was issued at FUTO:

The Senate of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri at its 375th Extraordinary meeting held on Monday, December 2, 2013 considered the directive of the Federal Government on resumption of duty by Academic Staff in Federal Universities and decided that academic activities in the University should resume immediately for the conclusion of the 2012/2013 Rain Semester.

Consequently all students of the University are required to return to campus between Monday December 2, and Friday December 8, 2013 while Rain Semester Examinations commence on Monday December 9, 2013 and end on Saturday December 21, 2013.

Accordingly, all academic staff are required to proceed immediately to their respective Departments to sign in for resumption of duty not later than Wednesday December 4, 2013.

However, the FUTO branch of ASUU said any attempt to break their ranks would be strongly resisted by their members. The Monday’s communiqué urged members to ignore the resumption notice by FUTO management, adding that the branch would not engage in any academic activities until the Federal Government committed itself to implementing the ASUU-FGN agreement.

Females Outclass Males At Ajayi Crowther Convocation

The fifth convocation of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Oyo State held on Saturday with the highlight of the event being the elevation of female graduating students to the institution’s roll call of academic excellence.

The best of them all, Temitope Olayiwola, who graduated from the Department of Accounting and Finance, with a first class degree, started her academic journey in Ajegunle, a slum in Lagos State.

Five hundred and fifty-two students obtained their degrees at the event. Fourteen of them obtained first class degrees; 131, second class upper division and 300, Second Class Lower Division, while 104 graduated with Third Class. The list brought the total number of students that have graduated from the school since inception to 2,500.

While Olayiwola emerged best from the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, another female, Eniola Adeoye, emerged the best from the Faculty of Humanities. There was also applause for Aderonke Fashiku, who came top in the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The three girls graduated with first class degrees.

Beyond emerging best at the faculty level, the trio also led the pack in the departmental prize award. Interestingly, Adetoun Olajumoke, Rainat Adepoju, Oluwatoyin Adeleye and Salimot Olaifa – all females – also picked the departmental prize awards.

Even as the ladies took the shine of the day, there were glimpses of brilliance from Charles Sanusi, Olaitan Olukowade, Chimezie Uguzo and Adedamola Adenuga, who gave the menfolk a cause for celebration.

Olayiwola, a product of Dorcas Memorial Nursery and Primary School, Ajegunle, and Lagos State Model College in Ikorodu, who also won Bolanle Awe Prize for the Best Female Student, said she drew inspiration after attending the university’s third convocation.

“I feel so excited and happy. I give glory to God for this success. It was not easy in any way because there were distractions. But I thank God I came out with success despite all the challenges.

“When I entered the school, I never thought I would be the best among my colleagues. I just wanted to do my part and come out with a good grade that my parents would be proud of. I was encouraged after watching the third graduation ceremony held in the school. I was overwhelmed with emotion when I listened to the speech delivered by the best graduating student at the time. I set a target for myself that if someone could do it, why not me. I was determined to be the best so that I could also deliver a valedictory speech on behalf of my colleagues. Determination and focus saw me through it. I did not join any society in the school but I took part in church activities regularly.”

On the standard of academic in the school, Olayiwola said she had an erroneous impression about the standard of education offered by private universities, having spent a short period at the Kwara Polytechnic, Ilorin, before proceeding to Ajayi Crowther University.

She said, “Before coming to the school, I was at Kwara Polytechnic briefly and the impression I had was that private universities could never offer quality academic work. But I was wrong because when I came here, I realised that the standard is high and very competitive. You have to be at your best to succeed here. The infrastructure to succeed is also coming up because the school management continues to improve on the standard every day, which is encouraging to any serious student.”

The 25-year-old also said she would like to return to the institution one day to inspire students to academic excellence, choosing teaching profession over other jobs.

“I will like to earn further academic certificates and return to this school as a lecturer one day,” she said.

The Vice-Chancellor of the school, Prof. Kolawole Jaiyeoba, said graduands of the institution were always successful in their life endeavours.

“I want to say that our students have been found worthy of character and learning. The feat of producing well-rounded graduates has been made possible by the university’s adherence to its vision and mission,” he said.

Anambra Distributes Buses To Schools

Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi has said quality education is one legacy he would be leaving behind as governor of the state.

Speaking in Awka, the state capital after presenting more buses to schools in the state, the Governor made it clear that no society can move forward without quality education and to buttress his point, the governor has so far released 230 buses to schools in the past few months.

In his speech, the Governor said “this is just one of the promises. Those who are not receiving here today, be rest assured that you will get it.”

The Governor asked traditional leaders and union leaders in the state to maintain effective supervision of school projects in their areas. He also revealed that the State Government has set aside salaries for 5,000 teachers to be employed into various schools across the state until December 2015.

The State Commissioner for Education, Uju Okeke said the buses will tackle the challenges of transportation and afford easy mobility for the students.

Although his tenure comes to an end soon, the Governor has promised the continuity of the projects he has embarked on.

What a Shame, As The First President With a Ph.D, Jonathan Has Let Us Down –ASUU Chairman

Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Olusegun Ajiboye, University of Ibadan branch, tells OLUFEMI ATOYEBI that the strike will continue unless the Federal Government honours the 2009 agreement it entered with the union

Apart from union activism, what other work do you do?

I am a lecturer at the Department of Teacher Education in the University of Ibadan and an Associate Professor in the institution.

How will you describe the attitude of President Goodluck Jonathan to education in Nigeria?

Everybody thought that President Goodluck Jonathan’s academic qualification would be an advantage for Nigeria. This is the first time we are having a president who holds a PhD and we were all hoping for the best. Being a Doctor of Philosophy puts you at the peak of academic achievement because other addition will come through promotion.

But we are not only disappointed but also let down. Even the military regimes that we all condemned supported education more than what we now have under Jonathan.

What are the issues that led to this strike and confrontation with the government?

If we go by the agreement that the Federal Government had with ASUU in 2009 and the MoU signed by the FG on January 24, 2012, you will discover that the critical issue is the funding of federal universities in Nigeria. There is a need for substantial amount of money to be injected into the universities to achieve total revitalisation and the two parties agreed on this. It was agreed in 2009 that a sum of N1.5trn would be required to fund the 24 federal universities then. It was also agreed that we will look at the number of students in state universities to determine how much would be needed to intervene.

With the 2012 MoU, the FG agreed that it would inject N1.3trn over three years into the universities. The modality for the payment of the money was that N100bn would be spent in 2012 which would rise to N400bn annually for the next three years.

When ASUU was making claims about the issue of funding universities, the government did not trust us, so it set up a committee to verify the claims. The National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy Assessment Committee report justified our claims and when it was being presented to the Federal Executive Council, Jonathan said all the state governors must also see the report. The NEEDS Assessment Technical Committee set up on the report said N800bn is required over two years to fund the schools. By now, the FG should have put in N500bn as intervention fund for federal universities if the MoU of 2012 was respected.

Critical to the issue in contention also is the Earn Allowances. This was part of the 2009 agreement but in 2012, the FG said the implementation committee should calculate how much is required to pay the allowance of all staff of federal universities. The committee was chaired by Wale Babalakin. The committee said N92bn is required to pay the money over two and a half years period. The government is deceiving Nigerians by saying that it has released the money already. Out of the money, N55bn will go to academic staff; the rest would go to non-academic Staff.

With your members’ salaries suspended, who is funding ASUU and how are your members surviving?
We are familiar with this terrain because this is not the first time that government will use hunger as a weapon in the struggle. Our members are determined and convinced that this is a just struggle. God is on our side and we don’t want any money from anybody. We are resolute in our demands and we will pursue this to a better conclusion. If the government wants us to call it off, it should honour our agreement. Our salaries are stopped but our lives have not stopped.

The government has the machinery to investigate movement of suspicious funds. We invite security agencies to go through ASUU account and see if we are receiving money from anyone. Members contribute money every month, so we do not need funding from anyone.

The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, warned that the economy could collapse if the FG accedes to your demands. How true is this?

His position shows the extent of ignorance of some people. How can the demand for quality education collapse an economy? If you have to rebuild a nation, educational system must come first.

If the government could bail out failed banks with about N3trn and the failed airlines with over N500bn and the economy did not collapse, then there is nothing too much to do for education. We are talking of Vision 2020 but how do we achieve it with an educational system in need of a bail out? The government should be sincere and declare a state of emergency in the educational sector.

The students seem to be against your action with the call by some of them under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students calling on lecturers to return to the classroom. Do you carry them along in this struggle?

We want to thank our genuine students for the support they have given so far. There is a difference between genuine and fake students body. We do not begrudge anyone. ASUU believes that this struggle is about the future of Nigerian universities. The bulk of our demands will benefit better learning environment for the students. ASUU is not fighting for its pocket. Our members work in the schools and have children studying there. We don’t have the money to send our children abroad but we must ensure that what we have here is good enough to shape the future of our country.

ASUU said the lives of their leaders are under threat. Who are the people threatening their lives?

Our members have been stopped by the police whenever they plan to have peaceful protest while other groups are allowed to do the same. Why is the government infringing on the rights of our members?

How far can you go in this struggle since the FG has refused to accede to your demands?

This strike is not about how far can we push it, it is about how well it will end. We want it to end well soon. We want our students to see evidence of our struggle. We want new hostels to emerge; we want them to see new classrooms; we also want them to see changes in the whole system. That is when we can look back and say that it has ended well. Parents are now beginning to see the reasons for our struggle. Our graduates are regarded as half-baked but we want this to stop.

Some said ASUU members are comfortable to stay away from classrooms because they have other means of livelihood like working in private universities while keeping their jobs in public universities as well. How true is this?

The university system gives opportunity to lecturers to work as adjunct staff in private universities. It is a practice all over the world. We are not encouraging our people to combine too many of these because they don’t even have enough time to do their normal work. What we encourage them to do is that they should face their work so the accusation is not just.

Do you have children in Nigerian university?

My two children attend UI. I don’t even have money to send children abroad to study or to a private school in Nigeria. As a matter of fact, any student that passes Universityies Matriculation Examination will go to public school and not private university. We are not condemning any university but what we are saying is that the quality we parade in public university must be sustained. Public primary and secondary institutions have been killed but we don’t want the public university to die.

How do you approach the issue of discipline among your members because there are cases of intimate assault involving lecturers in some universities?

We cherish discipline in our universities. We have Ethics and Grievances Committee which deals with such cases. We do not condone impunity. We stand for honesty and integrity.

How will you assess the quality of Nigerian lecturers?

We are best with great teachers that have made their marks in big universities abroad. We are a group of intellectuals. The minimum qualification for teaching in a Nigerian university is a Master’s degree certificate, which makes a lecturer an opinion leader.

Why then do we have graduates who cannot write letters?

That is the basis of our struggle. It all boils down to quality academic environment and funding. Nigeria is at the lowest rung of the ladder in terms of university funding in Africa. Ghana puts 30 per cent of its budget in education.

What is the situation of things now?

As at today, government has made some offers but we will present it to our people. The strike is still on but we must reiterate the fact that if the government refuses to honour our agreement in full, we will not go back to the classrooms.

Anambra University Renamed After Ojukwu

Anambra State University in Uli has been renamed after the Late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in celebration of his 80th posthumous birthday.

The Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, announced the renaming in a live broadcast on the television station of the Anambra Broadcasting Service.

He reiterated the commitment of his administration to restoring standards which demand a simultaneous transformation of all sectors and the recognition of role models.

He urged the people of Anambra State to continue to seek ways of making the state a great one.

Late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was a Nigerian military officer and politician. He served as the Military Governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria in 1966.

He was the leader of the unsuccessful breakaway Republic of Biafra from 1967 to 1970 and a Nigerian politician from 1983 until he died on November 26, 2011, aged 78.

Uganda Varsity Requests For Nigerian Lecturers

A University in Uganda, the Islamic University Mbale, Uganda has requested to the Nigerian authorities for fifty-seven lecturers in various fields.

The request is sequel to a bilateral agreement signed between Nigeria and the Republic of Uganda last month.

In the agreement Nigeria renewed its pact to assist the East African country with skilled personnel
Director-General of the Directorate of Technical Aid Corps (TAC) Dr. Pius Osunyikanmi in an interview said the written request was submitted through the Nigerian Embassy in Kampalla.
Osunyikanmi said that the request of the Islamic University which was made through its Vice-Rector, Dr. Mouhamad Mpezamihigo is in the area of Engineering, Law, Medicine and Education.
According to him his office “had also received a deluge of requests from various sectors in Uganda with many calling for the deployment of classroom teachers to curb the shortfall in the number of teaching personnel in the East African country.

The university, Osunyikanmi has not less than 200 Nigerian students in its enrollment presently.

He pointed out that beneficiaries of the scheme who would be recruited across the country and be deployed next January are mainly first degree holders with 3 years experience.

Osunyikanmi however said TAC is finding it difficult enlisting Doctorate Degree holders in the scheme as the amount they are to receive is below the industry standard in Nigeria.
He noted that a lot of requests from majority of African countries are for PhD holders.

Osunyikanmi pointed out that TAC would make a request to President Goodluck Jonathan to approve increase in the stipend for Senior Lecturers to meet the demand of the countries.

The DG said that “the request from our brothers for our assistance is massive. In fact, less than a month after we renewed the pact with Uganda, we have got about 150 requests.

“This scheme is mutually beneficial to us in Nigeria and those countries we are deploying to. With it, we feel proud of playing our role which is also exposing our youths to outside practices.

Unilorin Fresh students to get PC tablets

All newly admitted students of the University of Ilorin will have a PC tablet each to boost the institution's ICT drive and enhance e-communication between the students and their lecturers.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, disclosed this last Wednesday (October 2, 2013) while answering questions on a special Unilorin 89.3 FM live interview programme, 'Talk to the VC', to mark his one year in office.

The media chat, moderated by Segun Alabi of Unilorin 89.3 FM, has Abiodun Fagbemi of The Guardian, Layiwola Olarenwaju, Daily Sun; Arowona Abdulazeez, Nigerian Pilot; Hammed Shittu, This Day, and Olusegun Adebayo of Youth Spring news magazine, as members of the interview panel.

Prof. Ambali said, “We hope to start a new era with those coming in because we have to empower them to face the challenges of the ICT world,” adding that “all the curriculum and courseware will be on the tablet so that you have the whole classroom on your hand.”

The Vice-Chancellor charged the students to concentrate on their primary reason for coming to the University, which is learning, noting that his administration is committed to providing a comfortable environment for the students with adequate accommodation facilities on campus.

Prof. Ambali also noted that the University was committed to producing graduates endowed with requisite entrepreneurship skills in order to prepare them for the larger society.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that the University, in addition to reviewing its academic curriculum every five years to reflect current trends, is partnering professional bodies and industries to ensure that graduates are exposed to skills that will be of value to them and to the development of the society at large. He disclosed that the Federal Government, through the Tertiary Education Fund (TETFund), has approved funds for the establishment of a permanent Entrepreneurship Centre in the University.

The Professor of Veterinary Medicine identified improved security on campus, staff development, infrastructural developments, and improved internet connectivity as some of the achievements recorded in the last one year under his leadership.

Prof. Ambali also noted that significant steps are being taken to boost the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the University through such ventures as the University Plantation and the Zoo as well as through alumni contributions.

WORK-STUDY: LENDING A HAND, INFLUENCING STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

The average Nigerian student is wrought with different challenges in the bid to get an education. Most of the times, these challenges are more financial than intellectual. There have been cases of students who were bright and passed through public school with flying colors, but could not afford to purchase Jamb forms. You find most times that the lady selling recharge cards at the junction, or the boy who is a conductor on a molue was forced to do what they do because they needed to make enough money to go back to school. Not every child is from a wealthy background, and so the education which some treat with so much levity is a prized possession worth fighting for to some.
I have no intention to mull over the sufferings of the “masses” in this article, my main aim is to let every student struggling with financial stability know that there are opportunities available on and off campus to support themselves while in school without having to lose their dignity in the process as is common with a majority of students in tertiary institutions.

A work study program is naturally designed to help participants get acquainted with the rigors of balancing both academics and work. Thus, most institutions consider the student’s academic standing before allowing him/her be a part of the program. At the University of Lagos for instance, to participate in the work study program, a student must have attained at least a 3.5 G.P.A after his/her first year at the university. This assures the authorities that the student is indeed intellectually capable to withstand the pressures that might come with combining work and studies. Preference is usually given to students who are from quite humble backgrounds who otherwise have little or no support from their home front, and who are industrious enough to want to work while schooling to take the stress off those at home. Currently, I can only categorically name the University of Lagos as one of the foremost institutions in Nigeria that operates a very functional work-study program. Students are placed to work in different facilities on campus, and are paid a reasonable wage on an hourly basis. Time sheets are given to the students, which must be signed duly after each day at their place of work. The work study program helps the student in more ways than one. Apart from the fact that such a student would be privy to important information on student initiatives inside and outside the school, the student also is privileged to have firsthand information on scholarship positions outside the country and could be a beneficiary of such.
A lot of the above depends on the willingness of the student to be involved in school-related activities. A lot of students sign up for the work-study program and never see it to the end because they feel the work is too “boring”, or they are ashamed to be seen by their fellow students working on campus, they feel “uncool” trying to make ends meet, and thus shy away from being beneficiaries of opportunities that sometimes are life changing in effect. As a participant of the work study program at the University of Lagos in the not-so-distant past, I was able to get the opportunity to work with the most efficient people I have ever met. Posted to work at the University of Lagos Main Library, I was glad to be surrounded by people who lived and worked for the love of books! (Nerdy, I know).  Combining the work study and my academics was not really a problem because I was surrounded by a wealth of knowledge, and as a student of History, I couldn’t have been in a better place. That aside, I realized that the work study program did a lot of good for students. Apart from providing them with additional funds to cope with the financial demands that come with getting an education, it also provides them with the skills they need to survive in a typical working environment. I can say for a fact that majority of the people I came in contact with during the work study got steady jobs outside the university with the help of the people they had met during their time working in school. Others even got ideas of business ventures to embrace outside of their initial course of study in the university.
More tertiary institutions should have work study programs that harness the student’s abilities to study and work at the same time. Apart from paying these students, institutions could experience growth using these students in the appropriate manner. Now imagine a scenario where we have universities that pay students to be research assistants to seasoned academics, imagine the wealth of knowledge that would be generated and the impact same would have on the development of tertiary education in Nigeria. It would also make institutions financially independent. It is simply helping students to help the institution, giving students who are struggling with the payment of their fees the opportunity to be able to do so and still contribute to the greatness of their school.

ASUU Strike Completes 100 Days

One hundred days after members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities embarked on a nationwide strike, the end is not in sight yet, CHARLES ABAH writes

In countries like South Korea, the first 100 days of a child is very symbolic. Within this period, the life of the child and that of his parents are often celebrated. In keeping with the tradition of the people, prayers and various types of gifts are offered to the gods during parties organized to mark the event. This is accompanied with much feasting in the child’s home. The purpose of such ritual is to increase the newborn baby’s chances of becoming successful on earth.

Globally, it is also common among political appointees or government officials to celebrate their first 100 days in office. For instance, President Barack Obama of the United States celebrated his first 100 days in office with pomp and ceremony. The period in the US serves as a benchmark to measure the early success (or otherwise) of president.

In Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan and many state governors also celebrated their first 100 days in office. Of course, the celebrations took place with much fanfare. Advertorials were placed in the newspapers and parties were held in government houses to mark the achievements of the political office-holders during their first 100 days in office.

Unfortunately, there are no celebrations today as Nigerians mark the symbolic first 100 days that lecturers in the country’s public universities embarked on industrial action.

The lecturers, who commenced the strike on July 1, are protesting the non-implementation of an agreement they signed with the Federal Government in 2009, as well as the non-payment of their earned allowances.

Many people are compelled to ask what the country, particularly the education sector, has achieved in the first 100 days of the ASUU strike. Since the strike is still in progress, analysts conclude that nothing significant has been achieved. In their thinking, several dialogues and meetings targeted at resolving the crisis have failed to yield positive results. Therefore, there is really no cause for celebration.

A lecturer at the Lagos State University, Ojo, Prof. Ademola Onifade, notes that contrary to expectation, the current struggle by ASUU has achieved nothing for the lecturers and public universities.

He says, “In politics and governance, politicians celebrate the first 100 days on the positive side. But here we are, nothing has been accomplished in this struggle. I suspect that the game plan of the Federal Government is to wear us out. The authorities do not want to address our requests. However, if their target is just to wear us out, they will not succeed.”

But judging by recent statements made by the representatives of the government, there is an indication that the crisis will be resolved. Indeed, President Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo have promised that the crisis would be over soon.

Earlier, the FG, acting through the Governor Gabriel Suswam-led committee, had released N100bn for infrastructure development in the universities and another N30bn for the teachers’ earned allowances. But the leaders of ASUU dismissed the sum as a token, saying it was comparable to a drop in the ocean of their requests.

While both parties continue to seek the best way to settle their differences, the mood in many homes and in the public universities affected by the strike remains sober. Academic activities in these institutions are still suspended. The students and their parents are forced to deal with the frustration and feeling of hopelessness arising from the strike, just as the striking lecturers, who claim that they have not had any meaningful dialogue with the FG, continue to despair.

The lecturers have not been paid their salaries for the past two months. But this seems to be the least of their worries. The Chairman of ASUU, Obafemi Awolowo University chapter, Prof. Ade Akinola, who says there is no political colouration in their demand, notes that the body’s major concern is to save the universities from dying.

He says, “ASUU will continue to call on Nigerians to help beg the Federal Government to be patriotic and see reason in not allowing public tertiary education to die. The FG should honour the agreement mutually entered into in 2009 and further reinforced by the Memorandum of Understanding of February 24, 2012. It was in general to save the public universities from total collapse.”

Also, a communications specialist, Mr. Muyiwa Akin, thinks this is not the right time for ASUU and the government to trade blame. He says that both parties should find a mid way to resolve the crisis.

“All the parties should realize that they should protect the interest of the students. In my thinking, sincerity is lacking in this matter. The signing of the agreement took place some years ago and if perchance, the FG is not able to meet its own side of the deal, it should be open about that.

“Again, the government should show sincerity and commitment in funding education and keeping to agreements, just as ASUU members, who are seeking the improvement of the quality of education, should consider the fate of the students. For, without the students, there will be no ASUU and without ASUU, there will be no students,” he says.

Meanwhile, ASUU insists that the 100-day-old strike has no political colouration.

In a statement by its National Strike Coordinating Committee, obtained on Monday, the union dismissed the October 1 broadcast of the President in which he referred to the strike as politically motivated.

The statement read, “The primary goal of our union is to work for the repositioning of the Nigerian university system for global competition in terms of comparable facilities and staff quality. This goal we have pursued with diligence as a trade union.

“The Umaru Yar’Adua/Goodluck Jonathan government did not accuse ASUU of playing politics all through the three years (2006-2009) negotiations that produced the 2009 agreement. As Vice-President, Jonathan made significant input into the negotiation process. In 2012, when the MoU was signed despite doubts about government’s sincerity, President Jonathan did not impute political motives. Even the landmark report of the Committee on the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Public Universities was not interpreted as political.

“Why is it now when ASUU insists that the Federal Government should deliver on what it undertook to do under the 2009 agreement, the 2012 MoU and the 2012 Needs Assessment Report that the union is being accused of embarking on a political strike?

“ASUU members, and, indeed, progressive Nigerians, know too well that the accusation of politicization of strike is a cheap blackmail. If anything, it is the Federal Government that is trying to whip up political sentiments over matters that are straightforward and clear to all and sundry.”

JAMB Sets 2015 Date For General Computer-based Exam

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has given 2015 as the deadline for phasing out the paper and pencil method of examination in the country.

The Board advised prospective university candidates to make adequate use of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities that abound in the country ahead of the deadline.

JAMB registrar Prof Dibu Ojerinde made this disclosure in Akure, the Ondo State capital, yesterday at the computer-based testing programme organised by the examination body for secondary school students in the town.

Ojerinde, who led other JAMB officials on the trip, told newsmen that the purpose of the exercise was to make the students see that there was no big deal about computer-based examinations.

Disclosing that the paper and pencil tests are gradually being phased out, the JAMB registrar disclosed that all JAMB examinations will be computer-based from year 2015.

While thanking the management of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), for allowing the board to use its facilities for the advocacy test and the authorities of the secondary schools that participated for releasing their students for the exercise, he expressed happiness at the performance of the students.

“This shows to them that the computer-based test is easy as food they take; in fact, anybody who can use a handset should be able to do the test. As you can see this idea today, over 100 of them did it, even some of their teachers participated and there is no problem at all.

“What we are saying is that the computer-based test is the key and it is the way to go now. Things are changing, if you don’t change, you can be changed; that is how life is, but what we are saying is that technology has changed things and we are moving with the trend,” he said.

Ojerinde who was of the view that the exercise was worthwhile, said the 10 schools that participated have seen its importance, noting that the train of the board would move to Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo (ACE) from Tuesday (Today) “where we are going to do a little bit of advocacy test but mainly,we are going for admission of candidates into Polytechnics, Innovative Enterprises Institute (IEI) and we are expecting about 350 to 400 candidates to be tested there for their admission.

“We did that of UNIUYO about 4weeks ago, and the first set to do admission into polytechnics through this means will take place at Adeyemi, also that of the Colleges of Education will take place there.

While assuring that the security of the new electronic method of examination would not be compromised, Ojerinde said, “You can only hack what you know in technology and unfortunately many people don’t know what we are doing here even the college we are using don’t know what we are doing and we do not go through their server, therefore we transfer it to the terminal and after the whole thing we take it back from our terminal.

“The only way to hack this is if you have our server which is not possible, bacause we have a procedure to protect our server. Hacking is only possible through the internet okay, and this one is not going through the internet at all.

Emphasising on the readiness of the board for computer based examinations he stated that “2015 is the end of all paper test.

Everybody will have to do computer based test come 2015. Of cause anybody who want to do JAMB in Akure must do it with computer, if you don’t want computer based test you go else where, where there is no computer, but since we have facilities here and we have also at Adeyemi College, I don’t see any reason why we should have paper and pencil test in any town near this place during the next examination.

“Though not all state capitals are good enough for this exercise in terms of facilities, but wherever the facilities are, we will not hesitate to make good use of them.

“For instance, Ondo is not the state capital of Ondo state but we are lucky to Adeyemi College there, FUTA is in Akure, we also have Elizade University at Ilara Mokin and we have Rufus Giwa Polytechnic in Owo, so the facilities are there and we are going to encourage many candidates as possible to do computer based test, even if we have 3million candidates in 2015, we have enough facilities for them.

Computer Based Test will limit examination malpratice in JAMB - Ojerinde

Ondo – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Tuesday said that the introduction of Computer-Based Test (CBT) in its examinations would curbexamination malpractice.
Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, JAMB’s Registrar, said this in Ondo at the first technical meeting of the board on 2013/2014 admission to Nigeria National Diploma and National Innovative Diploma awarding institutions.
The meeting took place at Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo.
Also JAMB has commenced the inspection of schools which would be used as CBT centres in the state.
Ojerinde said that CBT was also a way of making the candidates to be ICT-compliant.
He said that CBT would make the results of any examination conducted by JAMB to be ready within a week.
“We have gone digital in JAMB. What we are going to do now is to make use of computers and within a week, the results will be on the Internet.
“Unlike before when we were using the analogue style; the new scheme will stop malpractice,” he said.
Ojerinde, however, noted that everybody now wanted to go to the university to obtain degrees, adding: “Obtaining a degree is not the only way to make it to the top.
“We are encouraging as many people as possible to develop interest in technical education and entrepreneurial education,” he said.
Also speaking, Prof. Adeyemi Idowu, the Provost, Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, lauded JAMB for devising strategies to curb examination malpractice through the introduction of CBT.
“The recent introduction of computer-based examination is one giant stride which I believe, as time goes on, will drastically reduce the spate of examination malpractice,” he added.
In his remark, Prof. Femi Mimiko, the Vice-Chancellor, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, said that the introduction of CBT by JAMB would make Nigerians to be ICT-compliant.
“Ojerinde’s tenure has brought about an uncommon transformation in JAMB; it gives hope that Nigeria has ability to transform itself,’’ he said. (NAN)
