UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN (UNILORIN) SET TO BUILD 1,675-ROOM HOSTELS SOON

Hostel accommodation problems facing students of the University of Ilorin would soon drastically reduce as two developers have expressed their intention to build hostel facilities of 1,675 rooms in the University.

At separate meetings with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, Principal Officers, Provost, Deans and Directors of the Universitylast Thursday (April 11, 2013), the two developers, IBFC Nigeria Limited and Alpha Morgan, said they had concluded all arrangements to commence work on the projects subject to the approval of the University authority.

The first company, IBFC, represented at the meeting by its Director General, Mr. Saidu Garba, will build five blocks of 1375 rooms, three for female students and two for male students.

On the other hand, Alpha Morgan will build three blocks hostelfacility of 300 rooms, two for female students and one for postgraduate students.

While the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the IBFC project was signed last Thursday (April 11, 2013), that of Alpha Morgan is expected to be signed within the next seven days.

The Vice-Chancellor signed the papers on behalf of the University while Mr. Garba signed on behalf of his company.

Briefing the University management shortly after the signing of the MoU, the IBFC Chief Executive said the company had agreed to build 1375 rooms, under the terms of Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT).

Mr. Garba said that work would commence at the site in three weekstime, adding that the company would provide independent power supply, independent water supply and internet facilities for use by students accommodated in the hostels.

He also disclosed that the hostels would be equipped with relaxation centre, common room, gymnasium and kiosks. The Director General explained further that funds would be sufficiently provided to ensure a timely completion of the project, stating that his company would wantto give the students a sense of belonging and comfort as they engage in their academic pursuit.

Also briefing the University management, the Managing Directorof Alpha Morgan, Mr. Ade Buraimo, said that funds for its planned three blocks of 300 rooms had already been set aside and assured that work would begin on their site within 60 days from the day the MoU is signed.

Mr. Buraimo disclosed that a certain percentage of the revenue realised from the investment would go to the motherless children while stressing that the company is planning to be the best hostel provider in the University.
In his remarks after the briefing by the two developers, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ambali, expressed happiness for the hostel projects, which he noted would drastically reduce the hostel accommodation problems facing students of the University.

Prof. Ambali noted that the University presently has more than 30,000 students out of whom only 3000 are accommodated on campus. Stating that the projects are about the welfare of the students, Prof. Ambali informed the developers thatthe University does not condone uncompleted or abandoned projects.

He said that the Physical Planning Unit (PPU) would work closely with the developers to ensure the projectsconform to the University master plan. Hesamol International Nigeria Limited was also present to sign an MoU to build a Unilorin Games and Recreation Village with world class facilities.

The President/CEO of the company, Mr. Henry A. Olofin, stated that the Games Village would make Unilorin Parks a tourist destination and help to brand the University. He added that the project would create job opportunities, improve students’ education experience and ease students’ school life while also generating income for the University.

He disclosed that the company is backed by Danish technology.

The Vice-Chancellor, who recently returned from a working visit to Harvard University where he delivered a lecture, hinted after the signing ceremony that Prof. Jacob Olupona of Havard University donated books to the University. The books were presented and later handed over to the University Librarian.
