Good and Bad News - ASUU SHUNS NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, AS ASUP PLANS TO CALL OFF 70-DAY-OLD STRIKE

The ongoing strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may linger for a while as its leadership, on Tuesday, snubbed a parley with the joint committee of the National Assembly on Education, along with the Ministers of Education and Labour and Productivity, Professor Ruqqayatu Rufai and Mr Emeka Wogu. This is in sharp contrast to the willingness of the leaders of the Academic StaffUnion of Polytechnics (ASUP) to shelve its 70-day-old industrial action if the government was prepared to take care of their demands. At the Wednesday meeting aimed at resolving the lingering issue between the Federal Government and ASUU leadership, both the Minister of Education, Professor Rufai and her Labour and Productivity counterpart, Wogu, were kept endlessly waiting for the arrival of the ASUU national executives, with none of them showing up at the end of the day. The lawmakers were only later informed that ASUU officials said they could not wait for the joint committee to finish its earlier meeting with ASUP officials held at the same venue, with the officials said to have angrily left the National Assembly complex.
