Zamfara Has 1 Million Out-of-school Children

Zamfara State has over one million out of school children, making it the state with highest number of such children in Nigeria, Director, Junior Secondary Schools of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Alhaji Sani Mailafiya, has said.

Speaking at an interactive session with stakeholders in Zamfara, Mailafiya said the number of children in school was confirmed through the state’s primary education assessment committee.

Presenting a paper at the event, chair-man of Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, Alhaji Lawali Liman, said out of the school age children that get access to primary schools, only 50 per cent of them complete their primary education and move to secondary schools.

“For those at the senior secondary school level, the outcome is measured through WAEC and NECO. And the appalling thing is that Zamfara always scores the lowest point both in WAEC and NECO, thus affecting the number of students who get admitted into tertiary institutions”, he said.

Liman said there are many factors that determine the quality of education, one of which according to him is the quality of teachers.

The authorities of National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) on Tuesday disclosed that 5,108 candidates who sat for the 2013 May/June National Business Certificate (NBC) and National Technical Certificate (NTC) examinations were sanctioned over different cases of malpractice.

Registrar/Chief Executive of the Board, Olatunde Aworanti, who disclosed this while announcing the results, called on the National and State Assemblies to initiate laws that will ensure the implementation of the establishment of modern and well equipped technical colleges in all the Local Government Areas in the country, with a view to boost technical education.

Aworanti said 106,573 candidates enrolled for the 2013 May/June examination nationwide, but 103,753 candidates sat for the examination.

He added that out of the 103,753, “28,230, representing 27.2 per cent, obtained credit passes in five subjects and above, including Mathematics and English Language.

Candidates enrolled in 36 trades, five trade related subjects and eight General Education subjects. The examination has the highest entry in Book Keeping with a total of 78,897”.

The Registrar, who commended the Federal Government’s effort to strengthen technical education, asserted that technological advancement and sustainable development largely depends on the attention given to technical and vocational education by stakeholders.

He recommended that in order to elevate the nation in technological advancement, more collaborative partnership between public and private sectors should be employed in funding technical and vocational education.

“In addition, the National Vocational Qualification Framework should also be implemented as approved, while proprietors of private technical and vocational institutions should endeavour to improve on their workshop facilities by furnishing their colleges with latest technologies”, he further suggested.

Osun Sponsors 20 Youths To Germany For Agricultural Training

Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola has admonished 20 youths sponsored by the state to Germany on a special agricultural training to remain focused there and ensure that they justify the investment of the state as the trip cost over 64 million naira.

Aregbesola gave the admonition during a send-off ceremony for the 20 youths being sponsored to Germany for advanced training in agriculture and food production technology in State of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

He explained that his administration's commitment to making agriculture more modern is one of the major reasons for sending them to Germany. He said this will increase food productions for local consumption as well as exportation.

The governor noted that the training is in continuation of his government’s drive to revolutionize agriculture in the state under the Osun Rural Enterprise and Agriculture Programme (O’REAP).

He said the administration is providing the necessary infrastructure and supports for farmers by supplying them with inputs such as improved seedlings, fertilizers and fumigants among others; giving them hundreds of thousands of hectares of already prepared farmlands.

He added that his government is liaising with reputable local and international partners–such as the Institute for Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), and International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), at Ibadan for assistance in the area of technical knowledge which will boost production and make farming easier, more interesting and more profitable. He said it is necessary to add value to agricultural practice by applying advanced knowledge in science and technology.

"We have adopted a multipronged approach to achieving this objective. On one hand, we are providing the necessary infrastructure and supporting our farmers with inputs.

"This requires supplying them with inputs such as improved seedlings, fertilizers and fumigants among others; reviving the old farm settlements that were the hub of the agricultural miracles of the Obafemi Awolowo era; opening up our rural areas by an aggressive campaign of road construction and rehabilitation to facilitate easy
accessibility and movement of goods from farms to markets; and the linking of farm produce from Osun to the huge market in Lagos via the Lagos-Osun Rail Logistics System," Aregbesola said.

Niger Delta University (NDU) Accreditation Withdrawn?

Students of the Bayelsa State owned university, Niger Delta University (NDU), Ammassoma, are gripped by uncertainty over the withdrawal of accreditation of key courses in the university by the National Universities Commssion (NUC).

According to the Students, who spoke with LEADERSHIP, accreditation for seven key courses of study, including Law, has been withdrawn by the NUC.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the NUC also placed 20 other programmes of the university on interim accreditation during its last accreditation exercise.

It was also gathered that the university put forward 31 courses for accreditation but the NUC approved only four for full accreditation.

There are fears that the programmes under probation may still be denied accreditation in the next accreditation exercise slated for September and October this year if the conditions for full accreditation are not met.

Reasons given for the non-accreditation of the courses, sources hinted, include inadequate teaching staff, especially professors, PhD holders and senior lecturers.

Others were inadequate library facilities, laboratory, lecture buildings and poor power supply.

While students currently studying the non-accredited programmes will continue with their studies, new students will not be offered admission pending the accreditation by NUC.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), NDU chapter, Beke Sese, said the non-accreditation of the affected courses was a justification of poor funding of universities for which ASUU had been on strike.

Sese stated in an interview on Wednesday that NDU had remained a “glorified secondary school” ten years after it was established.

“Poor funding of universities has been the issue. This is what ASUU has been emphasising over the years. We’ve been pointing this out even in the current national strike action”, Sese said.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the university, Domo Alagoa, said he would not react on the matter over the telephone phone.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO FOR A BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE

As a Student, there are things you might not chance to learn in the class, part of this things are what i have decided to share here for more knowledge about things around. An example is this Update, read and learn more.

Biztoon illustration
To  keep customers coming back, businesses must have excellent customer service and strive to improve at all times,SIMON EJEMBI writes
After toiling for years, you have set up your dream business, albeit on a small scale. You have even come up with an excellent marketing strategy and it is rewarding you with patronage, causing you to show up at ‘work’ every day with a smile on your face. But how long will the good times last? Will the customers come back? Will they multiply? These are questions experts say an entrepreneur needs to keep in mind. Doing that, they explain, will help them to avoid suffering the same fate as small businesses that succeed in attracting huge patronage only to realise that they are ill-prepared to cope with the pressure of a huge clientele.
For a business to succeed and to keep customers coming back while attracting more patronage, experts say it requires an excellent customer service. They add that, no matter how good the service is, there is the need for it to be improved upon regularly. Doing so will prevent them from inadvertently causing their customers to patronise their competitors, thereby reducing their chances of survival and growth.
Amanda McCormick, of About.com explains that delivering excellent customer service can be achieved easily.
She recommends the following steps:
Target a niche
According to her, occupying a niche means you won’t be competing with a lot of similar businesses solely on price.
“And because you will be selling products and services that are customised to the specific needs and predispositions of a select group of people, you can often charge more. Your products and services serve a market that can’t easily find alternatives,” she says.
Connect with your community
This is another step McCormick says an entrepreneur can take to deliver excellent customer care. According to her, this involves offering freebies on special occasions.
Citing ice cream makers Ben & Jerry as an example, she explains that while quality products helps to attract customers, keeping them may require more than that.
She recalls, “The original scoop shop became a community favourite thanks to its rich ice cream and creative flavours. Ben and Jerry also made it a point to connect with the community, hosting a free film festival and giving away free scoops on the first anniversary of the store, a tradition that still continues. In 1980, the duo began making pints to sell to local grocers. In 1981, they expanded this operation.”
She also recommended the following steps in her article on customer care.
Create a “Red Velvet Rope” policy
According to her, the book, ‘Book Yourself Solid,’ argues that it’s essential for freelancers and consultants to create a “Red Velvet Rope” and be very selective about working with clients.
She adds that author Michael Port believes that having only “star clients” that inspire and energise your work will help you to do the calibre of work that will help you to attract more star clients.
“The solution is to separate your clients into three groups – duds, mid-range and stars. Cut loose your dud clients, and decide if you can develop your mid-range clients into stars. Within the book is a series of exercises on deciding what exactly constitutes a ‘star’ client for you,” she explains.
Get digital
While stressing the need for you to be tech savvy, she quotes Columbia Business School’s David Rogers, as writing, “From smartphones to social networks, today’s digital tools are helping your customers connect, create, and interact with one another on a global scale.
“This is changing your customers’ relationships with one another, and with every business, no matter the size or industry. In the past, businesses relied on a broadcast model to influence customers with mass marketing, projected out one-way, to as many consumers as possible. To succeed today, businesses need a network model, one that takes advantage of customers’ ability to engage, interact, and even collaborate with your organisation and one another.”
Check the customer’s pulse
Neil Newcomb of IMC, a magazine for customer service professionals, says it is important to determine how happy a customer is. He writes, “Every time you interact with a customer, in person or over the phone, initiate a quick discussion to gauge how they are feeling. And as you begin to build a relationship with a customer (and get a feel for their perception of your business), consider doing a quick survey or comment card. This will easily demonstrate to customers, employees and competitors alike, that you intend to continually improve on your service.”
Newcomb says it is also important to:
Understand obstacles customers face
According to him, many managers forget (or don’t know) what it is like to be a customer of their own business.
To do this, he stresses that observation is important.
“Watch your customers’ movements and behaviour when they are in your organisation. Are they visibly annoyed? Do they stand in line, looking at their watch? Can you tell by their body language that they would rather be somewhere else? Do your frontline staff seem attentive to their needs? Gather this information as you go about your daily tasks,” he explains.
The following tips were among five recommended by Forbes Magazine Contributor, Sunday Steinkirchner, in an article published in 2012:
Be available
If a customer can’t get hold of you when they need to, you could lose them forever. We recently changed both our insurance provider and web developer, and the decisions were based on availability and accountability. With the new companies, we get the owner on the phone every time, and they’re there day or night if a catastrophe happens. In our own business, we value face-to-face interaction with customers, which is often a rarity these days. Whether it’s travelling across the country for trade shows or taking time for a quick coffee or Skype session, our strongest relationships are with the customers we know personally and keep in contact with regularly.
 Offer knowledge
Building strong relationships with our customers is great, but we also get to offer and trade knowledge with them. In our trade, a customer can compare several competing copies of a book online, but they won’t get a conversation about the title’s complicated printing history. When we’re speaking with customers, we spend the majority of time talking about the merchandise itself, trends in the market, and the customer’s own collecting habits. Afterward, we negotiate a deal. A customer can even know more than you do on a particular topic! Take advantage of this opportunity to learn more.
Trade shows are another great way you can offer knowledge to your customers. Organise seminars with expert speakers to draw potential customers interested in your product or services.

ESUT dons committed to ASUU strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) chapter has insisted on not compromising the ongoing strike by its members.
It said the only way its members would backpedal is for the Federal Government to implement the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement and the 2012 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
During an interview with reporters in Enugu, Acting Chairman of ASUU- ESUT, Festus Omeje, blamed the government for reneging on its promise.
ESUT dons committed to ASUU strikeThe lecturers called on men of goodwill, to prevail on the Federal Government to respect the two agreements signed.
He said: “ASUU and Nigerians are worried by the institutionalised falsehood, and lack of integrity exhibited by the Federal Government and hence condemns this perfidy in its entirety.”
“One of the hallmarks of good governance is integrity; and this is an all important virtue of those who claim to superintend such an important sector as education.
“The excuse that the government cannot afford to adequately fund university education is dishonest in the face of a situation in which government officials and politicians continue to engage in unconscionable pillaging of state funds.”
Omeje said the face-off was beyond salaries and allowances for lecturers, pointing out that since the 2009 agreement, the government has set up fact-finding missions to ascertain the state of universities.
“Panels of inquiries for need assessment for universities have been set up and reports have been submitted, yet the authorities in the education sector seem to have shunned implementation of the recommendations.
“The needs assessment committee went round the country and what it found was shocking. First, it found that the students-teacher ratio was 1-400 on the average instead of one-40. It found that the classrooms were inadequate and could accommodate only about 30 per cent of the number of students and that education standard was on the decline.”

STRIKE CONTINUE AS ASUU withdraws from negotiations with FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Thursday 22nd August 2013, announced its disengagement from further negotiations with the Federal Government, over what it describes as the latter’s perceived insincerity in the 2009 agreement as well as the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) both parties signed in January last year.
The union National President, Dr. Nassir Faggae Isa, said at a press briefing held at the University of Lagos on Thursday that the 2009 agreement and the MoU must first be honoured, even if ASUU feels the need to consider renegotiation with the government.

The union had embarked on a total strike on July 2 over government‘s failure to honour the 2009 agreement.
Faggae said, “Consequently, our members are left with no other choice than to prosecute this strike to its logical conclusion. ASUU members nationwide are saying this striker will not be suspended until and unless the government respects the 2009 agreement and makes concrete efforts to implement it in the best interest of the country.”
According to him, during a meeting held between ASUU and the government representative on Monday, government declared that it neither had any motive to revitalize public universities through committed funding, nor was it ready to pay in full the accumulated Earned Academic Allowances between 2009 and 2013.
