Student, who gave birth in toilet, names baby

OAU Student Oyinlola RotimiTHE baby delivered in the toilet of Moremi Hostel by a 400-level student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Oyinlola Rotimi, has been named Nifemi, Okikiola.
Rotimi, who gave birth last Tuesday, was initially accused of attempting to flush her baby boy down the septic tank.
But it was later learnt that Rotimi, who was inexperienced in child bearing, thought she had a stomach upset when she was actually in labour.
The 22-year-old mother, studying Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, had told our correspondent that the circumstances that surrounded the delivery of her baby made her “a celebrity.”
She expressed delight with the birth of the baby, describing her experience as “unforgettable”.
When asked how soon she would have another baby, she said, “not so soon,”
It was gathered that the naming of the baby was low-key due to theexamination going on in the school.
One of Rotimi’s friends, who spoke on condition of anonymity on Wednesday night, said Rotimi was “extremely happy” at the naming.
She said, “Today(Wednesday) is one of the days I have seen my friend looking so happy, she is extremely joyous. Although, this is not the actual way we planned it. We should have celebrated more than this if not for the fact thatexamination is ongoing.
“Most of our colleagues are taking exam and that is the major reason for the small celebration. I am hopeful that when the baby clocks one, we will celebrate it in a bigger way because he is our boy.”
However, some OAU students, who were not at the naming of the baby earlier, created their own fun by organising another ceremony, where they named the baby after the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Bamitale Omole.
The students, who gathered around 10pm on Wednesday, appointed a pastor among them to coordinate the christening.
Among the names the students gave the baby are Oriyomi, Omomoremi, Oluwanimilo, Titilayo, Eniolorunopa, Bamitale Omole.
The father of the baby, a 400-level student of Engineering in OAU, Oyewole Samuel, however, rebuffed attempts by PUNCH Metro to chat with him.
But one of his friends, who pleaded anonymity, explained that the father was not happy with the controversy that surrounded the birth of his baby.
He said, “He does not like the controversy and the noise about the birth of the baby. He is a cool person and does not like publicity.”

ASUP Strike Might Be Called Off As Meeting Continues

Speaking with journalists after about four hours meeting between the union and the government negotiating team, said ASUP members were not in a hurryto call off the strike.
Awuzie added that the union would meet again on Tuesday with the government. He said, “We have had deliberations. We have looked at the issues.
We have made some progress. We are likely to continue very early tomorrow morning. If we fought there, you would not see us smiling. “All of us are patriots. We are talking about one thing: The good of educational system in Nigeria. There are no adverse roles in this struggle. There are no winners, there are no losers. “We all appreciate the decay and therot in the system. And we think that, that is a very important sector of our national life which has to be propelled.”
Asked when the strike would be called off, Awuzie simply said,
“It’s not over.”
He however expressed optimism that all grey areas in the agreement would be “resolved very soon.”
Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqqayattu Rufai, debunked media reports that she had promised an end to the strike on Monday. She however reiterated the fact that the strike might soon becalled off going by the extent of deliberations between the two parties.
Rufai said, “Based on what we have done so far, the strike may be called off.
“Today as you have seen, we have met. We have made progress and of course we are still talking.
Even today at 10am, we have another meeting with ASUU. So, we are making progress.”Labour and Productivity Minister, Chief Emeka Wogu, also expressed optimism that the ongoing negotiations would end with more concrete resolutions.
He said: “We are working seriously to make sure that we resolve the issues that have arisen from the strike.
We have made progress. We believe that at the end of full discussions on this strike, we will come to a conclusion that will be more lasting than the previous ones.
ASUP, according to our source believe giving in at this point in time would mean the over 9 week strike was a waste.
The strike has not been called of yet, and the meeting still continues today. we will let you know the outcome.

NYSC: Foreign students must pass SSCE before mobilisation

Nigerian students who study in foreign universities must possess the minimum qualification of five credits including Mathematics and English Language before they are mobilized for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
Minister of Education Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i said this yesterday when the Director-General of NYSC, Nnamdi Okorie-Affia, paid a visit to the Federal Ministry of Education to seek clarification on modalities for mobilising foreign graduates for the one-year scheme.
Recently, there have been reports of Nigerian students who failed to obtain five credits in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) going abroad to study in foreign institutions and returning upon completion of their programme, to seek mobilisation for the NYSC. The minister said although the federal government was not opposed to any Nigerian seeking foreign training, such candidates must obtain the basic qualification of five credits including Mathematics and English Language before they can be certified by the Federal Ministry of Education and cleared for NYSC.

ASUP STRIKE: Students Protest In Solidarity With Striking Polytechnic Lecturers

Students from various Nigerian polytechnics, including Ofa Polytechnic and Ilaro Polytechnic, earlier today joined students of the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos to protest the government’s continued denial of demands by Polytechnic staff.

The students, who converged under the umbrella of Concerned Students Against Education
Commercialization (COSATEC),massed near the front
gate of Yaba College of Technology and the offices of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), located nearby in Yaba. They then marched in protest through the streets, terminating their rally at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota.
As they marched, the students chanted anti-government and anti-
corruption protest songs.
The students said they aligned themselves with the
demands of their lecturers. “If (our lecturers’) demands are met, the quality of education we receive is going to
be improved,” one of the protesting students said.
Many of the students bemoaned the grave effect of the lingering strike on their academic and professional futures.
1140903 0
A lecturer at Yaba College of Technology told reporters that their two-month strike became inevitable due to the government’s failure to implement contractual agreements negotiated since 2009. “Till date, they have refused to meet their obligations to us. It is a sign of irresponsibility on the part of government that they flout agreements they made themselves.” The contentious issues include the dismal condition state of state-owned polytechnics, the appointment of unqualified persons as rectors by some state governments, the refusal of some states to implement approved salary packages forpolytechnics, and failure to adopt 65 years as the retirement age. The striking lecturers also oppose the continued recognition of the NBTE as a regulatory body for Nigerian polytechnics instead of creating a National Polytechnics Commission. They are also demanding an immediate amendment of the Federal Polytechnics Act . Our correspondent spoke to some student leaders at the Yaba College of Technology who said they had decided not to participate in the protests. “We are happy that the government is talking with the relevant polytechnic unions with a view to resolve the problems. That’s why we are not joining the protests,” one of the leaders said.

Policeman Fires At University Of Ibadan Student On Campus

A police corporal, Ajisafe Amos, escaped being lynched yesterday by angry students of the University of Ibadan when he gave a 400-level student of the institution, Adewale Adegboyega, a hot chase and allegedly shot his car at the main entrance of the university.

Adegboyega, who is a student in the Department of Guidance and Counselling of the institution said he ran into the campus because he was not sure of his safety in the hands of the policemen he encountered.

The police corporal reportedly shot twice with one bullet hitting the rear tyre of the student’s car. As the students heard the gunshots, they reportedly scampered for safety for fear of stray bullets.

In protest of the action of the police team, the students led by the Student Union Government President, Babatunde Badmus, demanded the dismissal of the trigger-happy policeman.

He added that it was dangerous for a policeman to shoot in densely-populated institutions like the University of Ibadan. They seized the identity card of the police man to prevent possible denial that the the person that pulled the trigger was not a policeman.

According to the student leader; “This man Ajisafe Amos must face the wrath of the law. The IGP should see to this case and ensure that the man is dismissed from the force.

” We will not allow anybody to play with our lives. We shall resist any attempt to sweep the case under the carpet. We want justice.”

It was the timely intervention of the Divisional Police Officer of Sango, Syblle Akinfenwa that prevented the policeman from being lynched.

Institutions To Admit 704,000 Students As JAMB Sets Oct. 31 Admission Deadline

Tertiary institutions across the country, yesterday, declared that they could only admit 704,000 students out of more than 740,000 candidates who are qualified to be given admission for the 2013/2014 academic year having scored 200 and above.
1,735,720 candidates registered for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, out of which 1,540,179 candidates had their results released as 738,375 candidates have already crossed the 200 marks bar. The results of the 36,000 candidates that wrote computer-based tests have not been made public.
jamb
This came as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, and National Universities Commission, NUC, vowed to vet post-matriculation admissions.
The institutions also debated the cut-off mark for this year’s admission after a rowdy argument at the 4th Combined Policy Committee meeting held at NUC headquarters in Abuja.
At the end of the day, the committee agreed on 180 for degree-awarding institutions, while the cut-off mark for non-degree awarding institutions was pegged at 150 from 160 to encourage candidates to opt for polytechnics and colleges of education.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, made the disclosures, yesterday, at the NUC headquarters, stressing that the admission capacity of tertiary institutions in the country had been raised to 704,000, from the initial 500,000.
According to Ojerinde, the board and NUC had to deal with the problem of admission of excess students for which the Federal Government was often pushed into a tight corner.
He also warned the institutions to stick to the deadline of October 31 for admission of students and cautioned that any student admitted outside the deadline would not graduate from the institutions.
“I wish to remind you formally that all admissions will come to an end by October 31. All institutions are hereby called upon to adhere strictly to this date as late submissions will not be entertained.
“We have discovered that some universities and other institutions comply with admission deadline, while some others do not comply and up till date they are still admitting students.”
Ojerinde also reminded the institutions of the mandatory guidelines on admission, pegging criteria for merit at 45 percent, catchment area, 35 and educationally less-developed states, ELDS, 20 for Federal Government-owned institutions.

It’s All Your Fault! UNIUYO Students, VC Trade Blames Over School Closure

Following protest that left some students of University of Uyo dead, and scores injured, while property worth millions of naira were destroyed, authorities of the school and students have been pointing accusing fingers at each other on who should be blamed for everything that happened.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Comfort Ekpo, has insisted that the school management cannot provide buses to transport the over 6,000 students from the town campus to the permanent site in Nwaniba, but the students alleged she has a commission and was profiteering from the transport arrangement on ground.

Fielding questions from journalists in Uyo, Ekpo said it was inability of the management to cater for the transportation needs of the students that made it engage the services of some private transport companies that charge N200 to take students to the permanent site and bring them to the main campus.
On their part, the students claimed that the transporter was yet to deliver the vehicles promised when the VC asked for the upward review of the fares.

Rufa’i said this at the Fourth Combined Policy Meeting on Admission to Degree-Awarding Institutions, National Diploma (ND), Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and National Innovation Diploma (NID) awarding institutions.

She said the meeting was to plan for the selection of qualified candidates into the nations tertiary institutions and also to restore confidence in the education system.

“I implore all stakeholders to follow the Federal Government’s guidelines on admission which stipulates a 70:30 Technology/Non-Technology ratio for ND programmes.

“Also, 60:40 Science/Arts ratio for Degree and Nigeria Certificate in Education programmes and also to observe the criteria on merit, catchments and educationally less developed states.

“In addition, we must not forget the carrying-capacity of our institutions as approved by the accrediting bodies,’’ she said.

According to her, the accreditation bodies are the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).

Rufa’i said in order to enhance the carrying capacities of the country’s institutions the ministry had undertaken continuous development and rehabilitation of infrastructure in the institutions of higher learning.

She, however, said the Tertiary Education Trust Fund had disbursed N256.4 billion over the past three years for diverse development activities in the institutions.

She said that at the polytechnic level all the 51 Federal and state and polytechnics had benefited from rehabilitation and upgrading of their laboratories to 21st century standards at a total of N15 billion.

She said that this had helped to enhance the teaching and learning process in the institutions.

She also said that work had also started on the construction of micro-teaching laboratories in our colleges of education.

The minister also said that all Federal Colleges of Education and one state College of Education per state would benefit from this, making a total of 58 institutions at a cost of N11.6 billion.

“I am pleased that these interventions continue to translate to expanded carrying capacity in our institutions.

“For this academic year, we expect carrying capacity to increase from 400,691 admitted last year to over 500,000.

“I urge all institutions to carefully examine their carrying capacities in relation to their expanding infrastructure. You must make sure that you fill the quota for each course.’’

She called on all institutions to adhere to the admission timetable as prepared by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Rufa’i commended JAMB on the successful conduct of the 2013 UTME.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, said the meeting was to prepare grounds for needed capital development to engineer the Nigerian Technological growth that would be attained through quality and functional education of the citizens.

“Let me remind all the federal institutions that the ratio of 45:35:20 for merit, catchment and educationally less-developed states, respectively, is still in force and should be adhered to strictly to ensure national cohesion.

“All Nigerians must be given the opportunity to mix and educate freely in any part of the country.’’

Ojerinde also said the ratio of 40:40:20 for state-owned institutions must be strictly adhered to. (NAN)

Kwara Poly: Police Didn’t kill Our Student

The authorities of the Kwara State Polytechnic have reacted to media reports that a student of the institution was killed by a police escort of one of the banks in the state on May 28, 2013.

A statement signed by the Registrar of the school, M.O. Salami, stated that the student claimed to have been shot dead was still very much alive.

The statement read in part, “You will recall that the reportage of the incident to the public was to the effect that the shot student had died when in actual fact he is still very much alive.

“This unscientific publication aggravated the annoyance of not only the students but, also the general public. This resulted in the destruction of property, disruption of traffic and violent disturbance of peace and harmony in Ilorin metropolis by miscreants and hoodlums who hijacked the peaceful protest from the students.”

NSUKKA: Loses N20m Monthly To Ghost Teachers

Nsukka Local Government Council in Enugu State has admitted losing N20 million monthly to ghost primary school teachers.

Mr. Tony Ugwu, chairman of the council, disclosed this at a briefing, saying that although the council discovered the ungodly racket recently, everything was being done to nip the development in the bud.

Ugwu noted that the scam, which had been in the system of the council for long, had bloated the number of primary school teachers in the local government area.

According to him, this prompted the council to spend over N80 million on wages of primary school teachers at the detriment of capital projects.

Ugwu said: “We have recorded reasonable progress in our efforts to combat the unfortunate syndrome before the tenure of this administration elapses by December this year so that the next administration would not suffer what we suffered”.

“Fighting the endemic fraud, the Council has reduced the wage bill of primary school teachers in the area to N70 million as a result of the machinery put in place to fight the canker-worm that had eaten deep into the fabrics of the council”.

Ugwu noted that the council would not relent until the ghost workers in the primary school system in the area were flushed out.

He added that the council would no longer tolerate a situation where people would be in another employment and still earn salary as primary school teacher in the local government area.

Ugwu also said despite the shortfall in revenue occasioned by ghost primary school teachers scam, the council was able to augment through internally generated revenue, IGR, which had risen to N20 million annually against the N2 million by past administration of the council.

He said almost all the major projects executed by his administration were revenue driven, saying “we will not leave any project we embarked upon uncompleted.”

He said: “Before we leave office, we would account to the stakeholders and the entire people of the area how we used the revenue accruing from the federation account to the council and internally generated revenue.”

FG To Launch Fibre-Optic Network Connecting 27 Universities

Abuja – The Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, said that the Federal Government would launch its Fibre-optic Research and Education Network, connecting 27 universities to the Internet by July.

Johnson announced the plan in Abuja on Tuesday at the ongoing Ministerial Platform when she presented the ministry’s achievements in the two years of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
She said the project currently being tested was part of the ministry’s initiative to make Nigerian students a priority in the development of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

She said that the project was in collaboration with Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) and World Bank STEP-B in the deployment of the education network to institutions.

“Next month we will launch that Fibre-optic Research and Education Network that is connecting 27 Federal universities to each other by the Internet.

“ The USPF supporting this project is expected to also connect 12 medical colleges, 28 off campus sites and nine federal universities by September 2013,” she said.

She said that more state universities, polytechnics and colleges of education were expected to be connected to the network by 2014 and 2015.

Johnson said the ministry had initiated another programme, called “Tertiary Institutions Access Project (TIAP)” under which desktop computers, printers, and wireless network facilities, among others, would be provided for tertiary institutions.

She said, “the ministry through its TIAP project had established connectivity in 17 universities and their teaching hospitals using fibre optics technology.

“Since the implementation of the programme, about 204 institutions have connected to it, with 74 institutions in 2012.

“We also have another programme, `School Access Project (SAP), providing classmate PCs, with e-learning content and accessories, solar power solutions, high speed Internet connectivity and wireless network deployment to government public schools

“This has been implemented in 605 schools between 2010 and 2012 with additional 218 schools in 2013

“All federal and state universities have now signed up for our Student Computer Ownership Scheme that allows students to purchase laptops using a low interest facility with monthly repayment plan of between N3,500 and N5,800,’’ she said.

Johnson, who decried low rate of adoption of ICTs by Nigerians, added that 0.9 per cent of households owned a PC, 3.6 per cent had access to one and 3.1 per cent accessed the Internet.

“An unacceptably high number of Nigerians are excluded from infrastructure that can meet their basic needs,’’ the minister said.

She said that increasing the spread of ICTs, particularly through mobile phones, could be a means through which this could be corrected.

She noted that the ministry was extending communications infrastructure to un-served and under-served areas through the Accelerated Mobile Phone Expansion (AMPE-BTS) programme that was helping to deploy Base Stations in rural areas.

“A total of 54 base stations has been installed while additional 28 are planned for 2013.

“We also have Rural Broadband Initiative (RUBI) that provides wholesale Internet bandwidth to ISPs, Cyber cafes, and ICT centres like Community Communication Centres (CCC) in rural communities.

“Of the 18 pilot sites selected, 12 are 95 per cent completed and transmission testing is currently ongoing in Akure and Osogbo,’’ she added.

Johnson said that the ministry was working to ensure that Nigerians had access to Internet at affordable prices, irrespective of their economic background.

She noted that with the intervention of the ministry, the number of base stations in Nigeria had increased exponentially since the inception of GSM service from 116 in 2001 to about 21,000 by 2010.

“The pace of growth has, however, slowed even as some existing base stations have been decommissioned as a result of terror attacks, theft and vandals.

“About 150 base stations were lost in 2012 due to bombings and flooding; twice as many dependent base stations were also affected,’’ she said.

Johnson said the numbers of base stations in the country was expected to rise from the current 27,000 to 65,000 in 2018 to meet the national target of a five-fold increase in broadband penetration by 2018. (NAN)
