UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN (UNILORIN) SET TO BUILD 1,675-ROOM HOSTELS SOON

Hostel accommodation problems facing students of the University of Ilorin would soon drastically reduce as two developers have expressed their intention to build hostel facilities of 1,675 rooms in the University.

At separate meetings with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, Principal Officers, Provost, Deans and Directors of the Universitylast Thursday (April 11, 2013), the two developers, IBFC Nigeria Limited and Alpha Morgan, said they had concluded all arrangements to commence work on the projects subject to the approval of the University authority.

The first company, IBFC, represented at the meeting by its Director General, Mr. Saidu Garba, will build five blocks of 1375 rooms, three for female students and two for male students.

On the other hand, Alpha Morgan will build three blocks hostelfacility of 300 rooms, two for female students and one for postgraduate students.

While the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the IBFC project was signed last Thursday (April 11, 2013), that of Alpha Morgan is expected to be signed within the next seven days.

The Vice-Chancellor signed the papers on behalf of the University while Mr. Garba signed on behalf of his company.

In his remarks after the briefing by the two developers, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ambali, expressed happiness for the hostel projects, which he noted would drastically reduce the hostel accommodation problems facing students of the University.

Prof. Ambali noted that the University presently has more than 30,000 students out of whom only 3000 are accommodated on campus. Stating that the projects are about the welfare of the students, Prof. Ambali informed the developers thatthe University does not condone uncompleted or abandoned projects.

He said that the Physical Planning Unit (PPU) would work closely with the developers to ensure the projectsconform to the University master plan. Hesamol International Nigeria Limited was also present to sign an MoU to build a Unilorin Games and Recreation Village with world class facilities.

Looming varsity strike: Students plead with SSANU, govt

Following the recent threats by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) to go on strike if a meeting with the Federal Government failed to grant their demands on the payment of Earned Allowance and rejection of the NEEDS Assessment Report in the university system, students in various institutions of higher learning have pleaded with both parties to consider the fate of students.

Rising from its NEC meeting held at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, last week, the President of SSANU, Comrade Samson Ugwoke, said the varsity workers may have no option than to commence a nationwide strike after the meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), slated to hold on the 19th April, fails to address the relevant issues such as the Payroll and Personnel Information System.

Mubi, Adamawa State, vacating school after the massacre of over 40 students of the school.

He also hinted that the National Association of Academic Technology (NAAT) and the Non-Academic Staff of Universities and other allied institutiona (NASU) – under the Joint Action Committee (JAC) had also got the support of their members to commence strike on the issues.

Ugwoke said the unions have delayed the strike due to the intervention of members of the House of Representatives who advised the Executive to raise a Supplementary Budget to cover the payment of Earned Allowance.

“But despite the various meetings, dialogue and discussions under the Implementation Monitoring Committee, over the last two years and promises from the government, the money needed for the payment was not captured in the 2013 budget, and this is an affront on the workers, the unions and their leadership.

“All the unions at JAC, SSANU, NASU and NAAT were together at a meeting on the invitation of House Committee on Education, which was very robust, interesting and successful. At the end, and as regards the NEEDS Assessment, IPC and Earned Allowance, the House suggested that the Executive should raise a Supplementary Budget covering the Earned Allowance.”

Vanguard Learning sampled the opinions of students on the looming strike and most of them pleaded with the various union members not to allow students spend longer time than necessary in school.

Oluwa Latifa, a student of Lagos State University, LASU, said even if they insist on going on strike, let only the affected parties go while other staff that aren’t affected remain in the classrooms so that academic calendar would not be disrupted.

For Susan Eru, a student of the University of Benin, “Though it is the students that would suffer for it, but the lecturers should go on strike if they deem it fit because working without adequate pay will not make them effective.”

Calling on government to honour its part of the agreement, Blessing Eze from Abia State University said; “Why won’t the government honour its agreement with the lecturers who have families they need to take care of? Going on strike will cause the government to remember that lecturers still exist.”

Waec 2013 Chemistry- How To Perform Titration in Chemistry Practical Read more: http://www.freebrowsinglink.com/2013/04/waec-2013-chemistry-how-to-perform-titration-in-chemistry-practical.

This is for all the waec candidates, learn how to perform titration in chemistry practical.
For all the Candidates writing the Waec 2013 examination, you can read this simple guideline on how to perform titration and don’t rely on where you will get expo. Be self confidence.
/Disclaimer/ The Article below is culled from wikihow, you can read the full tutorial there also by clicking the article source below this post.
What is Titration?
A titration is a technique used inchemistry to help determine the concentration of a reactant mixedin with an unknown. When done correctly and carefully, a titration will yield very precise results. Here’s how to perform one.
Steps/ Guides
1) Obtain the items listed in the “Things You’ll Need” section below.
2) Rinse and purge your burette.
3) Clean and rinse all glassware with tap water (DI H2O if available is better), using some detergent if necessary.
Be very careful with burets, as they are very fragile. Always hold them with two hands.
4) Rinse all glassware with distilled water to lower the chances of contamination.
5) Measure out a precise amount of analyte (the reactantmixed in with the unknown).
6) Fill your beaker or Erlenmeyerflask with a small amount of distilled water.
7) Rinse the analyte into your beaker or Erlenmeyer flask, thusmaking sure all of the analyte is in the beaker.
8) Put a small amount (4-5 drops) of the appropriate color indicator into the beaker.
9) Agitate the beaker’s contentsby swirling the beaker.
10) Fill the burette with an excess amount of titrant (chemical that reacts with the analyte). The titrant should be inan aqueous form.
11) Clamp the burette carefully to a burette stand. The tip of the burette should not be touching any surfaces.
12) Place the beaker under the burette.
13) Record the initial volume of the burette at the meniscus (the lowest part of the dip in the liquid).
14) Turn the stopcock of the burette (valve near the tip) vertical, so that titrant is addedto the beaker. Only let a small amount of the titrant out. A color change should occur. Agitate the beaker until the color disappears.
15) Repeat the above step until the color persists slightly (you may barely notice it, so be careful& go extremely slowly).
16)Record the volume of the burette.
17) Add titrant drop by drop as you near the endpoint.
18) Agitate the beaker’s contents after every drop.
19) Stop when you’ve reached endpoint, which is the point whenthe reactant within the analyte has been completely neutralized. You can tell you’ve reached the endpoint with a colour change, depending on which indicator youchosen to use.
20) Record your final volume.
21) Past endpoint – point of no return. Add drops of titrant untilyou pass endpoint. At this point, the beaker’s contents should beentirely the color of the color indicator when titrant is added.
22) Clean up by wiping away all standing water.
23) Dispose of the chemicals used in a labeled waste container.
24) Calculate the concentration of the reactant within the analyte using the data gathered.
Important Tips Have your eyes at the same level while reading the volume from the burette – ifyour eyes are at a diff level each time your readings will not be as accurate.
Record the volume of the burette to one digit past what is given (ex: buret has readings to the nearest tenth; take yourobservation down to the nearest hundredth).
Calculations of the concentrationshould be done to the appropriatenumber of sig figs.
Tips for better accuracy : put a small beaker over the top of theburette, especially if you are titrating with NaOH; if it is left in
contact with the air some of theOH will bond w/ water molecules and it will disturb the molarity ofthe NaOH solution.
Endpoint is extremely easy to overshoot, if you’re not careful and observant. When you have the slightest feeling you’re approaching endpoint, start counting drops, and go extremely slowly.
keep a watchglass over the flasksof water & the unknown; the timethey are left sitting outwhile you are doing your other titrations canchange the molarity.
Handle the burette with care – they are easily broken. Remember to take out the filterfunnel after you have done fillingthe burette with the titrant as it can prevent your titration from being perfectly accurate.
Precaution
Be sure to rinse all of the analyte into the beaker. Any leftin the weighing boat/ container will result in miscalculations.Don’t rinse any of the chemicals down the sink; put into an appropriate, labeled waste container.

KFC serves up degree course

Twenty-three employees begin BA in business management, first honours degree course in UK funded by a restaurant chain

KFC has invested £600,000 to fund half of the three-year course for 60 staff over the next five years. Tuition fees will be split 50/50 with the employee.  KFC is subjecting its zingers, popcorn chicken and BBQ rancher burgers to some academic rigour after launching a BA in business management.

The first employees with places on the course – the UK's first honours degree funded by a restaurant chain – have begun their studies in conjunction with De Montfort University in Leicester.

The firm has invested £600,000 to fund half of a three-year BA in business management for 60 restaurant managers over the next five years, with the first intake of 23 – who enrolled in January – starting work at the university on Thursday. The first intake of 23 employees will combine residential sessions at the college with full-time work.

KFC will cover the cost of the college accommodation, while the tuition fees will be split half and half between the employer and the employee. The overall cost will be £9,000 over three years, the same figure as the annual tuition fee at many universities in England.

Rival chain McDonald's launched a two-year foundation degree for its restaurant managers in 2010, combining classroom learning at a special facility in East Finchley in London with on-the-job training.

Lightning strikes SS3 pupil dead on Waec Exam day [Yesterday]

The family of a Senior Secondary School 3 female pupil of Muslim College Oworonsoki, Lagos, has been thrown into mourning after lightning struck and killed 19-year-old Celestina Farotide, who was about to start her final examination the same morning.

The victim’s father was said to be in shock and disbelief and had refused to show up to collect the corpse, saying, “It cannot be my daughter”.

The aunt of the deceased, Christiana Idowu, who described her as gentle, quiet and respectful said she saw her corpse in the hospital after the family received an emergency call from one of Celestina’s friends.

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity because she was not permitted to talk to journalists, said the incident occurred on Monday.

She said, “We had finished with the morning assembly, but some students were still coming in. Celestina had prepared her desk in readiness for the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination’s practical they were to have that morning.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that she later went to buy the food she would eat and when she was returning to her class in company with other students, tragedy struck.

The eyewitness said, “The lightning came in their direction and immediately three of the school girls fell down.

“Two of them rose up and ran and Celestina rose up too. Then the lighteningt struck the second time, and she (Celestine) fell finally on the floor and did not rise again.

‘She was immediately taken to the teachers’ staff room, where a teacher was asked to take her to the Gbagada General Hospital. It was there she was confirmed dead.”

The principal of the school was said to be away on a week-long conference in Makurdi when the incident happened but authorities of the school contacted Celestina’s grandmother at New Garage area of Lagos.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Education with her entourage were said to have visited the school on Tuesday morning.

A resident of the area, Mr. Kabiawu Babajide, who also claimed to be an alumnus of the school told our correspondent the lightning also wreaked havoc in the area.

The monarch of Oworonsoki land, Oba Bashir Oloruntodupefun, said the gods were angry because Oworosoki land had been desecrated by strangers and the government was taking over ancestral lands and selling them to non-indigenes.

He said, “It’s a pity the girl died. The circumstances surrounding her death are mysterious because the girl was never sick. From what happened, we can all see the gods are making demands.

“The shrines that should be used for sacrifices have been swept away in water. And the land we have is being sold by government officials to their friends and they send military men to threaten us.

“Government needs to give us our land back. The real Oworo is submerged in waters. We want them to help sand fill those places taken over by water because many cultural heritage has been lost. If this is done, evil will no longer occur.”

Facebook To Begin Charging For Messages

Soon, rather than later, your favorite facebook will begin charging rates of up to 15 dollars to contact people outside their friends' network.

If you're in the habit of sending messages to people who're not your friends, then it's safe to say that this is one habit which is going to cost you.

This cost was originally reserved for messages to celebrities, and high net-worth people on the site who're in very high demand, hence the cost for reaching them, however, its extension would now reach anyone who's not a friend.

The website has hitherto been free for anyone on the site, with messages to non-friends going to the "other" email box, and are treated as spam. . .

. . . Not anymore. . .

These latest changes will allow users to pay to prioritize their emails, sending them directly to the main inbox of their prospective friends.

And if you want to grab the attention of your idol or favourite star/celebrity, then you're going to have to pay more, with the charge scaled down or up depending on the level of popularity of the star.

Say you want to contact Barack Obama for instance. . . well, you'd expect to pay a whole lot more for that cookie.

Facebook says this idea is designed to prevent spam being sent to users of the network, but analysts fear that it might mark the start of a more entrenched payment scheme for the social media site.

In other words: They fear we might begin paying for facebook in the near future.

OMG!!!

Hear them (A spokesman for facebook): "The system of paying to message non-friends in their Facebook inbox is designed to prevent spam, while acknowledging that sometimes you might want to hear from people outside your immediate social circle.

"We are testing a number of price points in the UK and other countries to establish the optimal fee that signals importance. Part of that test involves charging higher amounts for public figures, based on the number of followers they have.

"This is still a test and these prices are not set in stone."

Experts believe that by getting consumer’s credit card details for small purchases now, it means that they will be able to attract greater revenue in the future.

Olly Mann, a gadget columnist, said: "This is probably a prelude to something much more substantial.

"If they can charge for smaller features their hope is that they can start charging for main features later on."

Lagos School Pupil Powers Generator From Urine

A Lagos school boy, Gbenga Bamidele Joseph, Year 10, has invented the second urine-powered generator, capable of generating six hours of 300 voltage electricity.

The teenager who is a pupil of Avi-Cenna International School, Lagos, displayed the project at a science fair penultimate Saturday.

His invention follows an earlier urine-powered generator invented by four girls of Doregos Private Academy also in Lagos, and showcased at the Maker Faire Africa, a pan-African conference of handcrafters in November 2012.

Joseph said he had picked up the project because it is creative and is an alternative source of energy which is fast gaining currency around the world.

Explaining the procedure, Joseph said the urine, through a cell device, is converted into hydrogen gas and nitrogen. Both are again separated by a water filter, then pushed into a gas cylinder for storage. A liquid bora removes the moisture, then it changes to dry hydrogen gas that is pushed to the generator as fuel.

"A litre of urine will power a 300voltage generator for six hours," he said.

Joseph's parent had funded the N53,000 spent in acquiring the materials used in the project.

Science teacher and Science Coordinator for Avi-Cenna International School, Adefowope Adesanya, said the procedure was quite a simple one.

"You know that urine is a chemical; containing urea and hydrogen. What we need to do is to make hydrogen come out of urine and send it to the fuel tank or chamber and use that to ignite the engine. Hydrogen is the fuel for the future," he said.

Joseph was one of about 150 young scientists who showcased different projects at the science fair themed: Beyond Your Horizon 2013.

Shobande Tirenioluwa from Year 7A made a Remote Controlled (RC) helicopter, using cardboard, plastic, small electric motor, three Low Emission Device (LED) light bulbs (for landing), remote sensors and a wireless directional remote control.

Another scientist, Precious Ufomadu of Year 10B, discovered a valuable alternative energy source from trash (manure) to methane gas (fuel). Jefferson Agbebaku made a mini-turbine or hydroelectric generator capable of 2.16 voltage

Eight-year-old David Afolabi, exhibited a self-built, computer programmed and highly sensitive robot.
Other projects on display were flocculation (purification of water); home-made air conditioner; DNA extractions from strawberry plant, banana, chicken; making of biodiesel from vegetable oil; simple Frequency Modulation (FM) radio transmitter, extraction of protein from milk and many others.
Adesanya observed that the pupils had been working on the projects in the last three months. He thanked his pupils for putting in the effort and their parent's support, "without which none of these would have been possible."

The Principal, David Ogburn,, said the fair was to showcase what the pupils have learnt in school, inform the public of what is going on in science and what scientific experimentation could achieve.
"The exhibition covers most aspects of science in terms creating things. All these are key elements of those things that mankind is trying to achieve through out the world today. It answers the significance of science, not only in the school, but also in the society and the country at large," he said.

One of the observers at the event, who is also the chairman of Evans Medical Plc, Bunmi Olaopa, said he was quite impressed with the inventions , which, according to him, shows that this country has a future in technology.
"All that we need is just to encourage our children. I saw a group work there on robot. If they are encouraged, I believe they can compete with the best any where in the world.

"I wish some of the people in the Ministry of Education would come here and see. Though, this is private institution and they pay a lot of money, but I'm sure that if government also invests in our public schools, then they will do the same. After all, it is the same brain that these ones have that those in the public schools also possess. It is just a matter of opportunity. If we take it as our priority, then that will be our future," Olaopa said.

Senate Opposes Scrapping of UTME, NECO

The Senate Committee on Education at the weekend opposed the planned scrapping of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and National Examinations Council (NECO), saying it would "perpetuate the unfortunate pattern of policy somersaults that has persistently limited progress in education sector."

The Chairman of the committee, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, who said the committee would meet to assess the move, added that if the proposed scrapping took place, it would amount to another misadventure that would result in reversals in the next five years.

According to him, attempting to scrap the institutions without addressing key problems facing the education sector such as poor access, quality, funding and institutional management, will only aggravate crisis in the sector.

Also speaking on the same issue, the Chairman, Rules and Business in the Senate, Senator Ita Enang, has tasked the federal government not to be in a hurry to scrap the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) without due process.

Enang argued that the scraping of the board and NECO would only come to effect after the blessing of the National Assembly.

Chukwumerije, who said the move would create anarchy in the education sector, further noted that scrapping UTME would "increase temptation to university authorities to cut corners in obeying rules on carrying capacities and unaccredited courses" and as well create "new fertile grounds for mushroom unlicensed institutions."

He insisted that the scrapping would open a "Pandora's Box that would surely strain the capacity of regulatory agencies and examinations, especially National Universities Commission (NUC), NECO and UTME" which he described as monitoring posts for the quality of studies in pre-university education.

"They define the quality of the student entrants into our tertiary institutions. Their results serve as annual national indicators of quality of Nigerian education. Poor results in past years have set off national alarms. Consequently, eliminating them denies Nigeria of these critical check points to monitor national education quality.

"In indicating the quality of education delivery, NECO and UTME results can be directly related to the quantum of funding invested in education. The huge disparity of funding between federal and state educational institutions is exposed by NECO and UTME results as the levels of investment in teaching and learning facilities as well as in staff welfare reflect directly on the achieved results.

"Eliminating NECO and UTME therefore will mask this unfortunate disparity and state institutions in Nigeria can continue to produce poorly trained secondary students. Associated with the level of funding is the quality of institutional management. The poor secondary certificate results of students from poorly managed institutions are also exposed by NECO and UTME. Without doubt, good managers are more efficient in handling human and material resources and consequently produce top performing students.

"Eliminating NECO and UTME will again deny Nigeria an opportunity to know the quality of governance of our educational institutions. The indications above show that the basic problems limiting the education sector are unrelated to the current intention of government to scrap NECO and UTME. It is my view that government should open the subject up for full discussion in order that the best interest of Nigeria and its teeming student population is primarily served," he submitted.

He also said NECO's responsibility to the burden of West African Examinations Council (WAEC) would increase the latter's workload and exacerbate the problem of poor handling of the certificate examinations of the ever increasing population of secondary school leavers which he said would exceed four million in the next few years, adding that clarity of national focus might be blurred.

He noted that scrapping UTME conducted by JAMB established by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board Act (Chapter 193, LFN) "will emasculate JAMB of one of its primary responsibilities to set and conduct harmonised examinations for admission of students into Nigerian tertiary institutions."

Meanwhile, Enang who represents Akwa Ibom North East (Uyo) senatorial district, spoke during interactive section with journalists in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital at the weekend, saying the scrapping of the two bodies would be based on an informed decision.

"When the proposals to scrap JAMB and NECO reach the National Assembly, NECO, JAMB, vice-chancellors and other stakeholders like student representatives, parents and others would be given opportunity to contribute to the debate.

"But I would urge the president not to seek to implement this first because all these are established by law.

"It should first of all bring the proposal to the National Assembly so that we can look at it.

"And unless we repealed the law, the proposal scrapping cannot come into effect because the law establishing NECO and JAMB was an effort between the executive and the legislature.

"And a law made by The National Assembly and assented to by Mr. President, the President cannot unilaterally kill it; he can only made a proposal on it so that we can discuss it.

"I don't want it to be like the matter of University of Lagos, where the pronouncement was made and later was sent to the National Assembly and there was opposition.

What I want the federal government to do is ensure that it sent the decision to the National Assembly, let us discuss the pros and the cons, call NECO, JAMB, VCs, representatives of the students so that we can take an informed decision," the Senator said.

Enang said he was in support of the move to scrap JAMB and NECO as such would safe cost as the presents situation causes a lot of wastages.

"I am in agreement with the federal government to scrap JAMB, NECO but retain WAEC; this is because when the students sit and pass JAMB, they are sent to the schools, the schools still conduct another set of examinations to admit students.

"So it becomes a wasted and double effort therefore, the cost of administering JAMB at that level would be used in funding universities and other educational facilities and infrastructures."

"Do not forget that the president set up a committee which was called Orasanye committee and he made recommendations on reducing certain parastatal and making them more functional, I believe that this is one of such recommendations and I am in utmost support of that action of government," he added.

Important Notice To All UNN Aspirants

NOTE: This write up was not made, in any way, to freak or scare you; on the contrary, it is meant to adequately prepare you for the big task ahead. So, put your mind at rest and follow these simple guidelines in order to give you leverage even as you achieve success in up-coming UNN Post UTME. Besides, no undergraduate within the University of Nigeria has a better head than you do. Now, let’s roll!

First of all, let me give you a brief info about the University. The University of Nigeria, commonly referred to as UNN, is a federal university located at Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria. Founded in 1955 and formally opened on October 7, 1960, the University of Nigeria has four campuses – Nsukka, Enugu and Ituku-Ozalla – located in Enugu State and one in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. The main campus of the University is located on 871 hectares of hilly savannah in the town of Nsukka, about eighty kilometers north of Enugu, and enjoys a very pleasant and healthy climate. The University, with a motto ‘To restore the dignity of man’ has been a very successful ivory tower, and has produced important personalities in elevated positions in Nigeria. The likes of Chinua Achebe, Dora Akunyili, Chimanda Adichie amongst others are alumnus of this great institution. Before I digress, let’s get to the main points;

1) Leave For Nsukka In Time:

I mean in time, not on time, I hope you know the difference from your Use of English. It’s important you be in the School at least two days before the exam especially for those coming from far places like Lagos. As a result of the mammoth crowd coming for this exam, there is bound to be heavy traffic in certain cities around Nsukka. Before now, this exam had been co-hosted/conducted both at Nsukka and Enugu (UNEC) campuses of the University, but this time, all the candidates will have to head to Nsukka, the only venue for this year. Also, statistics shows that over 50,000 candidates will be coming for the exams, that is a break down from over 60,000 that made UNN their first or second choice and scored 200 or above in the JAMB UTME. Note that a total of 128,776 candidates chose UNN as either their first choice or second choice course in the 2011/2012 JAMB UTME. Official statistics from JAMB is available here. Another point is that there are only about 3 major transport companies (Peace, Ifesinachi, and Globis) that ply the Nsukka route. The points I made above is just to give you a glimpse of what to expect when you decide to come to Nsukka a day before the exam or even on the exam day. Please come ahead of time

2) Transportation in School:

The only means of transportation within the school is via the school’s services known as UNN shuttle (This is clearly written on the shuttles buses and taxis available within and outside the campus). It takes students both in and out of the campus. These shuttles give one a great deal of convenience and a feeling of safety. They have, as their destination, a park in the town, which is very close to Peace Mass Transit park (i.e, in front of the popular Ogige market at Nsukka). It can as well stop you anywhere you wish inside the campus or anywhere within its route. There are also other smaller routes inside the school like the Flat (Zik’s flat) route. The summary of the transport fares is as follows

-Town (Park) to campus:

N 20 by shuttle bus

N 40 by shuttle taxi (mainly V W Golf car)

-Campus to Town (Park):

N 30 by shuttle bus

N 40 by shuttle taxi

-Anywhere within the Campus is N30.

It’s not advisable to ask for lift that day, pay for your transport fares. However, it is more painful not to know anyone or anything about the school before coming. Guess what? You’re at advantage for having gone through this. Ladies, as the most ‘endangered’ specie, we would say, “OPEN YOUR EYES.” We have our reasons; find out as you read on.

3) Ask for Help If Need be

When you need help in any way like locating a particular place in the school, ask for it, don’t pretend. Once it’s your first time of being to the School, whoever sees you would know, you can’t hide it. Just look for good and innocent looking student (although appearance can be deceptive) and ask for what you want. UNN students are friendly and generous; there’ll always be somebody ready to help.

4a)Accommodation:

In the past, the school provided accommodation for Post UME candidates who are required to pay N500 for the accommodation, and I believe same will be applicable this year. If you prefer a private accommodation, there are few hotels and lodgings in Nsukka, some of which are CEC( the school owned lodging), New & Old Hotel Carolina (outside, but close to the school), Milipat, Conis hotels. These few hotels & lodgings will surely be in hot demands. If you plan on staying with a friend, make sure you contact him or her ahead of time. However, most accommodation problems are been mitigated by the different campus fellowship bodies who will always be available with their buses, helping stranded candidates get an accommodation, and locate their different locations. Though you may have to leave your own faith or fellowship when you are finally admitted into the University as you‘ll get constant SMSs, calls, visits, and pestering to join their fellowship.

b) Don’t worry about what to eat:

Yes, it’s funny but I know some mummy pikins will actually be thinking about this. There is a variety of food to eat in Nsukka, the most popular being OKPA, a popular pudding eaten and enjoyed by many in Enugu state. It’s eaten like peanuts here, and I bet you‘ll enjoy it (although some of them can be REALLY pepperish). There are also other native Nsukka foods like aghara agha Ji, aghara agha ede, aghara agha oka. Don’t ask me how they taste, just taste and see for yourself, lol. You‘ll also get the usual general foods you see in other parts of the country.

5) Come with all the requirements:

You are required to bring the following for the screening exercise:

(i) A copy of ONLINE form duly completed, bearing the passport-sized photograph.

(ii)JAMB slip

(iii)HB Pencil and Eraser.

Do not go to the exam halls with your mobile phone as you‘ll be forced to drop it outside the hall, and who knows what will happen to it before you could come out to pick it. Information on the halls for the screening will be made available at the P.R.O. office in the campus and will also be available on this site a day before the exam.

6) Come for the exam prepared:

It’s almost impossible to prepare too much. Read extensively and within the JAMB curriculum. In the battle field, no enemy is less important. Do not look down on any question during the exam. Attack each of them like a soldier that is fighting with his last breath. However, DO NOT CHEAT! DO NOT INVOLVE YOUR SELF IN EXAM MALPRACTICE, UNN does not tolerate that. It’s a serious offence here!

7) Have an Alternative Phone Number Other than MTN:

It is important that you have an alternative phone number other than MTN with which you can contact whoever you‘ll stay with when you come to the school or with which you can be contacted easily as time has shown that MTN network in Nsukka most times go down whenever there is a big event like the post UME especially in the evenings.

8)Beware of scammers:

You have to be very careful ‘cos there will be wolves in sheep’s clothing. These fraudsters, who of course are not bonafide students of the University will be targeting gullible Post Ume candidates with offers of Admission runs, Accommodation (both free and paid), especially to Post ume girls. Don’t ask me why they prefer offering the accommodation to girls ‘cos I don’t know. They will always come as friends. You just have to be wise.

9) You are Secured!!

Once you are inside the University of Nigeria, your security is guaranteed. The university has a vibrant security department with a rapid response unit. You don’t have to panic. So whenever you find yourself in trouble, just raise an alarm and be sure you‘ll get a rapid response. 10 Get A Glimpse of How the questions look like

JAMB to Provide Writing Material at Exam Venues Nationwide

Following complains from students of not being provided the appropriate writing materials for previous UTME, JAMB has taken the bold step of independently distributing the materials at respective examination venues of candidates.

As at the time of composing this information, the required writing materials are currently being distributed to various exam centres nationwide.

The materials to be provided by JAMB includes;
- A simple Calculator
- A pencil, Eraser and Sharpener.

During registration, candidates expressed worry over the non distribution of these materials at the registration point, after Myschool.com.ng asked if Candidates were being given calculators on registration.

Upon review of the entire process, the editors on myschool.com.ng have come to the conclusion that distribution of materials at the exam venue is a more organized approach since this will avoid any form of missing materials from agents or candidates.

Candidates are also hereby advised that they should also go to the centre with their own (extra) writing materials as listed above. Myschool is advising you as this will protect you from any emergencies if for any reason, you were unable to get your own materials.

Preparations for the exam on 27th April is currently on as myschool.com.ng has provided you with FREE JAMB Past Questions to study. If you want to access it now for free, click here

FG sends 40 indigent students to UK varsity (Bayelsa State)

The Federal Government on Friday sent 40 indigent students from Bayelsa State to the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, on scholarship for four years.

The students who are part of a scholarship scheme established by Dr. Jonathan when he was the Governor of Bayelsa State had been having dfifficulties following the scrapping of the scheme by subsequent administrations in the state.

Fortune, however, came the way of the teenagers when the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Kingsley Kuku, took up the scheme as part of effort by government to equip youngsters from the oil rich region with quality education.

Speaking during a short orientation ceremony for the students in Abuja before their departure, Kuku admonished them to be good ambassadors of the country.

Kuku explained that the nation expects the highest standards from them having provided them with such unique opportunity in life.

He noted that President Jonathan started the programme for the brightest 100 pupils from indigent homes across Bayelsa State with the vision to create a pool of young educated citizens who would contribute to the development of the state and the economy of the nation.

He said of the 100 students, eight have been taken over by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), assuring that the remaining 52 would also benefit from the Federal Government scholarship to continue their education in some of the nation’s best model secondary schools.

Speaking to newsmen, one of the scholars, Enegi Nadum (17), expressed happiness for being able to continue their education and assured that they would do their best to make Nigeria proud.

“In the last few years President Jonathan has been like a father to me and I am a very happy and proud Nigerian,” she said

VCs, lecturers disagree over scrapping of UTME, NECO

Diverse reactions have trailed Federal Government’s decision to scrap the National Examinations Council, NECO, as well as the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, UTME, just as the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board, JAMB, Thursday restated its commitment to conduct a hitch-free UTME examinations on April 27, 2013.

Professors Ralph Akinfeleye of University of Lagos, Florence Banku Obi of University of Calabar and Abayomi George Ojanuga of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, who are in support of the proposed scrapping said it would give true meaning to university autonomy, eliminate irregularities and help universities capture the best students.

However, Prof. Olu Jegede of Obafemi Awolowo University’s, Vice Chancellor, Caleb University, Prof. Ayodeji Olukoju and Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, argued that the adoption of the White Paper’s recommendations would spell doom for our nation’s education sector which, they believe, would be thrown into a state of confusion.

While pointing out that the move to reduce the powers of JAMB was long overdue, Professor Akinfeleye said it would give true meaning to university autonomy.

He said: “It is long overdue. It would give true meaning to university autonomy as schools’ management would participate in the recruitment of the students as it is done in advanced climes”.

Asked if this would not breed corruption as it would be a case of selling admission to highest bidders, Akinfeleye said “It would promote pedagogical purity, quality assurance and transparency in institutions of higher learning because they would want to maintain their reputation and integrity.”

It ‘ll promote varsities autonomy

The Dean, Faculty of Education, University of Calabar, Professor Florence Banku Obi, who had similar view, said the move would promote university autonomy, as each institution will be able to decide who is admitted into the school.

“I know of someone who scored 300 in UTME but can’t speak English. This would take us back to the old system where after school certificate examination, a student goes to the institution of his choice where entrance examination will be conducted by the school.”

On NECO, Obi said “I do not know why the government will scrap it, as it was established to bridge the lapses of WAEC”.

Professor Abayomi George Ojanuga of the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, said the centralization, which JAMB represents, is not proper and it does not produce the best.

He said: “I think each university should be allowed to conduct its entrance examination as was done in time past, though JAMB would act as the regulator.”

Varsities should be allowed to conduct their exams

In a similar vein, the Vice-Chancellor, Fountain University Osogbo, Osun State, Professor Bashir Raji, said “with the criticisms trailing UTME every year, it is better scrapped. With the introduction of Post-UTME exams in the universities, it became double exams for students”.

On NECO, Raji noted that NECO was created in a bid to run away from the monopoly of WAEC. “There is nothing wrong with having two, three or four examination bodies in a big country like Nigeria. NECO has gained the confidence and acceptance of the people so I don’t know why government wants to do away with it now. Nigeria needs more examination bodies.”

Pointing out that the idea would help universities capture the best students, Professor Titilayo Kuku of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, said “a lot of irregularities trail JAMB’s exams. Students were buying results and that was why universities introduced post-UTME.

“A survey was conducted and it was discovered that those who score very high marks in UTME struggle to pass while those with low scores make first class or second class. At Ife, 45,000 candidates applied but after the post-UTME, only 5,000 managed to make it.

The advantage in universities conducting their exams is that they are able to manage it better and again, students will stop paying double, for UTME and post-UTME.”

On his part, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka, Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Lagos said, the scrapping of JAMB may be a step in the right direction depending on what the Federal Government is trying to achieve.

He said: “Almost all the universities in Nigeria are conducting their internal exams known as post-UTME. This makes it cumbersome for the candidates seeking admission, considering the fact that they have to sit for JAMB before the Post-JAMB. This is not so in most countries because the universities set their benchmark for admission, making things easier while saving cost on the part of government.

It ‘ll spell doom for our educational system

Leading the pack of those against the move is the Dean, Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Olu Jegede, who said this would cause a major setback for Nigeria’s education sector and universities will be far apart in technology due to lack of standard

He said: “The problem with this decision is that it will cause a major setback in our education sector, therefore, we should be prepared for the worst. In education, there is something referred to as science and measurement which is used for setting standardized exams such as the UTME. UTME goes through standardized procedure before getting to the students.

“But with this new development, universities will be far apart in technology, because it will be garbage in, garbage out. I know that the government may be trying to cut costs, but this step will lead to a reduction in quality”.

Advising government to tread carefully before adopting the recommendations, the immediate past ASUU President and current Vice Chancellor of Imo State University, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie, said UTME will enable millions of students to compete for the few admission spaces.

On scrapping of NECO, Awuzie said one examination body is not enough, adding, “there is a reason for WAEC and there is a reason for NECO, if you scrap, you must replace it with another.”

Education in comatose

Stating that the proposed scrapping of JAMB is an indication that our education sector is in comatose, the Vice Chancellor, Caleb University, Professor Ayodeji Olukoju, said stakeholders in the sector have to be part of making such strong decision”.

He said: “If admission is left in the hands of institutions, instances of some students having multiple admissions while some have none would abound, and the admission process will lack merit.

“NECO should be given another chance because it was established to help students who couldn’t get the five credits qualification for university admission.”

JAMB to go ahead with 2013 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, yesterday, gave assurance that the 2013 examinations would go on as scheduled. This was contained in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Board, Mr Fabian Benjamin and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Lagos.

The statement said that the reassurance became necessary in view of reports in some national dailies that the Federal Government may have cancelled UTME examination.

It said that the board wished to state that as a responsible and responsive organisation, it was not averse to innovation, changes and government policies aimed at improvement in the education sector.

The statement further reiterated that JAMB had not changed the date of the 2013 UTME for applicants seeking admission into the country’s various institutions of higher learning.

It said that consequently, the board’s 2013 UTME, slated for April 27, would take place as scheduled.

NECO staff express fear

With this development, members of staff of the National Examination Council, NECO, were yesterday gripped with fear following the purported plan by the Federal Government to scrap the examination body.

It was reliably gathered that majority of the staff of the Minna-based government agency were apprehensive of what may become their fate should the government go ahead to abolish the council.

When newsmen visited the council headquarters, yesterday, some staff who were at their duty posts were seen discussing the newspaper reports and their fate.

Efforts to talk to the Registrar and the Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Professor Promise Okpala failed as he was not on seat, while other officers kept sealed lips.

But a senior staff who spoke in confidence said they are yet to receive a copy of the report or directive from Federal Government.

He said: “As you can see, people reported for work today and we all attended to our schedules. It is true the report came to us as a surprise. We had to buy the newspapers to get the gist. We are sincerely disturbed, because in this country anything can happen”.

Another female staff wondered why the Federal Government will accept such recommendation by the Orosanye’s committee. She said: “Britain with lesser population has many examination bodies and here we are about to kill the only one we have. It will be sad if the Federal Government finally approves the scrapping of NECO”.

“The staff strength of the council is over 4,000 and with branches in all 36 states including, Abuja what will happen to us all”.

Stephen Oronsanye led Presidential Committee on the Retionalisation and Restructuring of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies had recommended the scrapping of the council along with 37 others.

The committee also recommended the merger of 52 and the reversion of 14 departments, in a move to safe over N862 billion between 2012 and 2015
